The locking solenoid failing 99,999 times out of 100,000 will cause the front diff to NOT "lock up". Normally open hydraulic circuit, it uses the solenoid to plug the vent from the gerotor pump, when the vent is plugged the fluid pressure applies the clutches. So unless it fails stuck out, plugging the vent that is not the case. Im not saying your mechanic was "wrong" bill, what I would be willing to say is that he was over-thinking a VERY common problem. They failed on my 05 4.7L Laredo with no ELSD's. Even now that I am in an independent shop its one of the first things I look at when one rolls in, if they are complaining about a clunk or not simply because its such an easy job and so common.
