05 WK.....Front Rumble.....sector shaft?

Ok....here is the best description I can give about this issue.....
Since its been real cold out, I have a noticible rumble while driving down the roads...at any speed if I hit a bump, the front will rumble almost immediately afterwards...sometime a little, sometimes alot depending on the road and the bumps I am going over. I immediately thought about the struts because it almost feels like the truck is "STIFF" WITH NO SHOCK ABSORBTION".
So I head over to my mechanic, he drive is and is thinking ball joints right away. Put it on the lift, nothing loose as far as the tire goes....we spent an hour looking all over the suspension and couldnt find a damn thing....so we put the tires back on the gound and I start rocking the steering wheel back and forth....low and behold we hear a clunk.....seems to be the top u joint on the sector shaft and possibly the lower one as well.
Here is where it is interesting....when I am on the highway, once I get around 62 mph, I hear the same rumble as I do when I hit a bump going slower....it also shakes my steering wheel at this speed up until I hit around 70...then of kind of dissapates after 70 mph.

My question is...has anyone had this similar rumble issue and was it at all linked to the steering column?
I understand the rumble and shaking at highway speed because of the sector joints being loose......but can that issue make that rumble on rough roads at the lower speeds as well?
Thx for any help you can provide!

Re: 05 WK.....Front Rumble.....sector shaft?

I had a similar noise in my 05 GC hemi. The mechanic determined that the mounts for the front axle housing had failed because the locking solenoid had gone out. Apparently when the solenoid fails it puts a lot of stress on the housing mounts and if they are old and worn like mine they fail. The end result is the whole from axle jumps around. There is a youtube video with the same noise posted by a guy who stuck a web cam on his jeep and filmed it. Hope this info helps

Thx for the reply Bill....I will try to find that video and maybe try to take my own and post it here as well.
The shake I got at higher speeds os gone now....turns out that was caused by both the front tires being out....way out....of balance....4 ounces on the front right and 2 ounces on the left front.....but the rumble is still there on the bumpy spots.

Re: 05 WK.....Front Rumble.....sector shaft?

The locking solenoid failing 99,999 times out of 100,000 will cause the front diff to NOT "lock up". Normally open hydraulic circuit, it uses the solenoid to plug the vent from the gerotor pump, when the vent is plugged the fluid pressure applies the clutches. So unless it fails stuck out, plugging the vent that is not the case. Im not saying your mechanic was "wrong" bill, what I would be willing to say is that he was over-thinking a VERY common problem. They failed on my 05 4.7L Laredo with no ELSD's. Even now that I am in an independent shop its one of the first things I look at when one rolls in, if they are complaining about a clunk or not simply because its such an easy job and so common.

Re: 05 WK.....Front Rumble.....sector shaft?

The problem is completely fixed and the truck runs solid now. I replaced the rear solenoid this last summer and it failed to the locked position. I was dragging my tires trying to turn on pavement, and that was with the solenoid wire unplugged. As soon as I put in the new unit it unlocked and ran good. That's when I first noticed on hot days the front would act like something was caught in the gears.

Here's a link to that video I mentioned.

I also attached the video of mine with the broken mounts.
