06 Grand Cherokee clunks when put in drive

The dealership stinks. They don't care. $60 just to diagnose?! $600 on labor IF they don't diagnose and just replace the "front differential bushing" that my local iffy mechanic thinks the problem is. Really??!! With the vehicle on the lift, he used a crow bar to lift what I'm assuming is the front differential from under the vehicle. As I looked up in there I could see a round thing where he said a bushing was located and part of the unit he was prying on was sticking into it. When he pried, there was a lot of play/movement. I've been looking but I haven't found any diagrams of the outside of the housing and where the part of it goes into the area with the bushing. It just clunks loud like a U-joint is bad--only without the metallic-sounding clunk that bad u-joints make. Just really loud and hard--with that much force when I put it in gear. It has done this for 100,000 miles (bought it with about 35000 on it). It has always made me cringe every time I put it in gear. The U-joints are fine. Definitely time to fix it, huh. But at well over $600 just for labor, I sure wanna make sure they replace the right thing. I've paid them hundreds of dollars more than I've had to over the years for them to fix things that weren't even wrong with my old 02 ram. Bastards. :-(

The differential bushings are well known to wear out and cause clunking when put in gear. Is there no thrustworthy mechanic where you live who could do the job for less?

This guy said he needed special tools to do it. How tough is it to do this? Can I do it with regular tools?

Hi,
I have the same problem with my 05 GC. I bought the OEM bushings off of amazon. You don't need special tools, just have to pull the front axles and remove the front differential off the vehicle. This is when the fun starts. Two of the three bushings are round and press fit into the differential housing like ball joints. This is where you will need some ball joint tools, pneumatic tools etc. There is a lot of labor involved.

There are some great videos on youtube which show the complete process. I would check them out before trying yourself. I plan to do it myself, but I need to put my 87 firebird on the road. I don't think I can do it in one weekend.

Please consider our sturdy ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1454093032.281787.jpg front differential bushing set as an alternative to OEM when you are ready to replace your worn out ones.
