Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

Vehicle: 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

After 3 years of putting up with my dash cluster going off like the 4th of July -- dash lights flashing on/off, gauge needles bouncing wildly, AC going on/off, my local auto repair identified my problem as a faulty ignition switch!

Yesterday, the 'event' was happening almost constantly so I took it in. Fortunately, when they started it up, the 'event' continued and the technician was able to wiggle the key in the ignition and control the 'event'.

This is an inexpensive repair and ends 3 years of frustration and worry about driving too far from home. What a relief!

I hope this information will help others here that have been having this same problem. Have that ignition switch checked.

Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

My cluster went bananas today. It usually just flashed once and came back. This time, it blinked incessantly. Not sure if the light switch stalk or the ignition key are a source of contention, they do not change the behaviour of the problem. wiggling key, setting stalk to lights off, etc.

Anyway, I picked up a can of contact/circuit board cleaner and a can of cleaner/lube at radio shack.

I found 4 harness connectors. Please advise if I missed something.

Engine bay, in front of brake booster.

Under driver dash, far left.

Fuse block connector on top; green. And two other mongo harness connectors, bottom one shown in yellow has been disconnected and sprayed. Top one behind white plastic cover, unmolested at the time of photo.

Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

OK, just did a test drive and when I parked I handled the key and guess what, fourth of july. Looks like I need an ignition key switch.

Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

It is called the ignition switch ~$44 retail, $<$20 rockauto. Not the ign cylinder assembly. I got MBW parts at pepboys. Had a little chrysler logo cast into the plastic, heh. Anyway, it's done now. Wiggling the key does not commence fireworks, so I'm calling it 'good'.

Be prepared to have the smallest of torx bits, a phillips driver and a butter knife.

1. Drop the panel under the column, it pops down from the top.
2. Remove ign key bezel, butter knife or equivalent from the bottom.
3. Remove cluster shroud, pops from bottom and top kinda.

4. Remove 3 torx screws from lock cylinder. Two on ign bezel, one from top, in front of cluster
5. Do the missionary on the drivers floorpan and finagle the lock cylindre till you can manipulate red release tab of the electrical connector. Pull that shit out and dont loose it. M-kay ?
6. Smallest torx screw mounts ign switch to cylinder, remove it. It is small so be keen.
7. Two tabs at the base hold ign switch to cylinder. Compress them with a needle nose and pull switch off.
8. Make note of clocking position of the switch. It is rectangular. I had to turn back about 90 degress to match the position of the removed switch.

Assembly is vice versa.

Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

It's probably not the ignition switch. Mine had the EXACT same problem. A new multifunction switch cured it and it's been a month (after having it flicker several times per day before). Although some have reported that the ignition switch can also be the cause, I would do the multifunction switch first, even though it costs a lot more. I got mine through J4J and after site discount and shipping it was just a hair over $100. Hope this helps bud.

Also, you'll need two torx screws for this fix, I think T20 and T25 but it could have been a T15. Uninstall/install took about 5 minutes (10 if you have no clue).

Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

Good info Kris. I see it on rockauto for about $100. Although... after 5 days, more than 25 ign starts, and test wiggles of the key, my GC seems to be happy with the new ign switch. fingers crossed

Nice, you're one of the lucky ones. The temporary fix for the MF switch (if your problem isn't fixed) is for you to switch the stalk to just on or off (instead of Auto if you have that feature). I just manually operated my lights (which worked perfectly without ever flickering for 3 weeks) before I bit the bullet and bought the new stalk.

Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

My radio and dash lights would flicker when I put them on the highest setting. This happened maybe around 40k miles. It never caused drivability problems. When I went did my rebuild I pulled the intake manifold off and saw that mice had been chewing the foam and wires under it. So I taped the wires up and the problem is now solved.

Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

I have the same problem, but I´m 80% sure is the multifunction switch; when christmas starts, I move the lights on the switch (internal external) and the problem stops.

Re: 06 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Problem wih Dash Cluster

I get the dashboard flicker occasionally, i have the lights on auto and the fogs on.. usually i turn the fogs off and it stops to flicker but that doesn't always work...

gonna have to observe whether the center dash flicks too.... you really have to watch it to even notice... which is hard to do when your driving

oh this is 06 hemi limited.... 136k
