06 wk grinding

So lately I have noticed when turning at full lock in reverse I hear a grinding noise coming from my wheel area. Today when starting from a light and under harder acceleration I noticed this noise very eveident. What could this be? Bad axle/spline? I have a 2" rc lift.

Re: 06 wk grinding

Friction modifier?? check your diff level... see if it's low. I had some grinding at full lock and it ended up being low on front diff fluid.. I topped it off with modifier from the factory. The moment you pull the plug and fluid comes out it's ok. If you have to dip your finger in and get a sample, I'd add some.

Re: 06 wk grinding

Also the friction modifier gets depleted over time. If not changed the diff fluid for a long time, i would just put new fluid in with the right amount of friction modifier in it. The grinding noise you hear/feel is the differential lock which is activated due to the speed difference between both front wheels in a turn. With the friction modifier ( also called limited slip additive), a certain amount of slip is possible in the diff lock, allowing the speed difference between the two front wheels. Without the friction modifier, the diff locks completely, making both front wheels rotating at the same speed and making one or both wheels hop when making (tight) turns.

Re: 06 wk grinding

Thank you for posting this question. I have been hearing lately in my '05 a grinding noise from my front driver side every time I make a hard left. I've checked the underneath before, but never thought to check the diff level.

06 wk grinding

It's one of the cv shafts. Almost certain.

Re: 06 wk grinding

After checking everything listed I'd also check to make sure your brakes are good. If you have water in the lines it could be causing your caliper to rub. I still had issues after bleeding my lines and it then threw the abs and speed sensor.

Bottom line I traced it for a month and it was one of my rear speed sensors cracked in half that was causing my abs to act up.

Re: 06 wk grinding

I almost wonder if it could also be that my bearings need repacking? This noise only happens when it's really cold. I live in Ohio, and the past couple of days have not been normal around here.
