08 5.7 Engine Shutting off while driving

I have a 2008 Limited with 5.7 Hemi was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue I cannot seem to figure out what is wrong and neither can the dealership. So what is happening is the jeep will be running smooth no issue and all of a sudden the rpm gauge just drops and the engine is off and lose power steering but all the electrical is still working. Once I can pull it over and put it in park, it fires right back up like nothing ever happened. At first I thought it was the PCM and the dealership thought it was same thing, so they replaced it. Then it continued to happen (this happens at various speeds ranging 20-60mph). So I contacted the dealership took it back and they replaced the WCM (wireless control module) and gave me new key fobs and promised that was the only thing that could have been causing this to occur and it would not happen again. Low and behold not even 2 days later the same things is happening. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?

Re: 08 5.7 Engine Shutting off while driving

Any codes showing up? Just a couple "WAGS"....the ignition switch or ASD relay/circuit. Is this unpredictable, or can you "make" it happen? If you can, have them hook their Starscan up and go for a ride to see if they can pinpoint the problem. I sure hope you're not having to pay for their random parts replacements that don't fix the issue.

Re: 08 5.7 Engine Shutting off while driving

A code showed up the first time when they changed pcm after that nothing has showed up. The pcm was covered under the powertrain warranty but the wcm was not and they changed that because they said they believed there was a short in the electrical system which is what was causing the engine to shut off. So naturally when it happened again I was furious. I can not predict when it will happen or make it happen it's always at the most random times. Other then this happening the jeep runs like it is brand new only has 70k miles on it.

Re: 08 5.7 Engine Shutting off while driving

Do you know what the code was?

First, how big is your keychain? If you have lots of keys and gizmos on it, it could have ruined the ignition switch. Even without, it could be bad. When you're driving, rattle the key around in the ignition (also lightly turn it back and forth without turning it off) and see if you can get it to quit. Make sure you're in a safe area though and won't be a hazard to you or others when you try it.

If that checks out, then check the Automatic Shutdown Relay (ASD) in the Front Control Module. At a minimum pull it and reset it in its socket. You may also want to switch it with the HVAC relay if you're in doubt. Also check the Ignition Switch fuse. Do this visually and with an ohmmeter. If in doubt, change it, as they don't cost much.

Sounds like an ignition control module, I had same symptoms on my Pontiac 6000, it'd be fine, then die at 65mph, pull over, let it sit for awhile, start right up & be fine for quite awhile... Random

Re: 08 5.7 Engine Shutting off while driving

Does the 08 have a traditional ignition switch, or is it a fobik thingy?

07 and earlier WK ignition switches are prone to failure, but ISTR that system changed somewhere after 07..

Re: 08 5.7 Engine Shutting off while driving

Can also come from loss of crank or cam signal from a bad sensor.

I do not remember the code I had it written down, but can't find where I left it in the garage. Second I only keep two keys on my key fob so I know that it's not a weight issue but when they changed the wcm they also changed the ignition switch it came in the kit they installed.

As for the other things I really appreciate the feedback and I will look into that tomorrow when I'm off. Hopefully I can figure this out.

It's your ignition switch. Did you get the recall done?

Yes early and they said that wasn't the problem which is why they changed the wcm

I was thinking that too if these are anything like my XJ which had the same symptoms and turned out to be a Crank Position Sensor?
