Hey Guys,

Would love some insight. I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 that just turned 75k miles. Did some driving this weekend. About 200 miles down south, then the Jeep sat for a day. Drove home, 200 miles back up north. About half way back to home, the Check Engine Light came on. I freaked out, cause I havent had any issues at all with this jeep.

I took it easy on the freeway the last leg home. Jeep still ran like a dream, great gas mileage (18mpg) no shakes, no funny smells, no nothing.

I didn't have a code reader at that moment, but looked online for some quick troubleshooting tips.

Checked the gas cap, and reseated accordingly. Light still on.

Checked under the hood for anything weird....

I DID find that an air inlet/outlet tube that went to my cold air intake had gotten lose. Not all the way disconnected, but def getting there. Re-seated it and the light was still on.

1 day later.... check engine light no longer on. Did this fix the issue? Was that it?

Got a OBII bluetooth reader and pulled the last code. P0404 - looked it up, Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

Do you think loose air intake tube could have caused the issue. I never cleared the check engine light, it just went off on its own?

Sorry this is long and boring, but can anyone offer me some insight. EGRs are cheap, but heard install is a bitch getting your hand and tools down there to get the old one out.

Let me know. Any help would be great

Thanks

It could have been a transitory hickup code, plus there are many codes that are "one trip fault" and "three good trips" will turn it off. I recently got the dreaded "Service 4WD System" showing on the EVIC (real cold damp morning) and it went off after 3 stop/start cycles. Haven't seen it since.

THE LIGHT HAS COME BACK.... now have about 90k miles

Again, long trip, about 5 hours up north, then 5 hours back down home a week later. Came on within the last 100 miles.

This time the jeep is feeling a bit sluggish I think. At a stop light, with my foot off the break, the car doesnt surge forward a bit as it used too.

Pulled the code.... same one as before regarding the EGR. Should I just get this replaced? Will this solve my issue? Watched the youtube video, and didnt want to have to cut one of the bolts. I also have an aftermarket intake, so I think I should have better access to install a new one?

Any help would be great. I have another big trip next weekend, if i cant fix it until after, any permanent harm to the JEEP hemi?

Also, best place to buy a new EGR (OEM)

Thanks to all
