Exclamation 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Problems Help!!!

All-

I just purchased a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 (Quadra Drive 2) with a 5.7L Hemi. I have had this vehicle for three days and it is doing the following:

1.) No horn
2.)No driver side headlight, No high beam auto, when high beam auto engaged the instrument cluster lighting turns off and no headlights.
3.)No windshield wipers.
4.) Windows will not roll down, I have tried the controls on every door.( Child Safety is not engaged) Sunroof does work.
5.) Rear passenger taillight, no blinker
6.) Driver side flasher is blinking quickly like it is about to go out.

I have removed the bulbs in question and they appear to fine. The fuses appear to be in good working order as well. The car ran fine for three days and then all this happened at the grocery store parking lot.

Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Nathan

I'm guessing it has to do with the battery. It obvious that there is not enough power going to anything that might require power. How is you car battery? Is it giving you problems? Are you having a hard time starting your car? Is it a new battery????

Battery looks new, no corrosion around the terminals etc. The vehicle starts and runs great. No check engine light, I was thinking this was a computer issue or an electrical short but then again I don't know.I just pray its going to be cheap!

Re: 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Problems Help!!!

It certainly sounds like some sort of electrical gremlin.

I would try unhooking the battery for 20min, and see if anything is improved when you hook it back up.

Other than that...can you take it back to wherever you purchased it from for them to look at? Were all these systems working when you bought it?

With all the systems affected (doors, lights, instrument panel, horn), it doesn't sound like a simple short to ground...

Was the vehicle flooded at any point in time? That is a common cause of widespread electrical mayhem.

Re: 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Problems Help!!!

Check your battery after it sits for an entire night (6-8 hrs) and let us know what the resting voltage is.

It honestly sounds like its something deeper than a bad battery or a fuse. More like the BCM.

Where was the Jeep originally sold? how many previous owners?

Re: 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Problems Help!!!

Ok, well I got up the nerve and took it to my local Jeep shop, waiting to here what ridiculous price they would like to charge to fix the thing.

I believe the car fax said it was one owner, Every thing worked on the drive home, but thats about all the driving I did, a good 4 hrs from Dallas to houston. There was no flood damage to the vehicle and had a clean title. I called the dealer and told the salesman what was going on, he asked if I was joking, wish I was! I haven't tried unhooking the battery but will do What is the BCM?

BCM = Body Control Module. This usually controls things like the windows, power locks, etc. Not sure if it controls all of the things you listed on our vehicles, but it certainly controls a lot of them.

If you bought if from a dealership, I would think that they will fix this free of charge. If they don't offer, I would certainly speak to the manager - 3 days after you purchase it sounds like a pre-existing condition to me!

You can do the following for no-cost:
1. Leave it sit overnight and check the bbattery voltage before you start it. Typical voltage is ~13.2 V.
2. Start & run engine. Should read ~14.3 V (above idle) as alternator and voltage regulator take over.
3. Go to Sears and ask for a BATTERY CAPACITY TEST. This is different than voltage. If battery is marginal, it will show up.

You can also go to Advance Auto and borrow their code reader to see if any DTC's are present. However, because they may be secondary level, it may take the dealer's StarScan (or specialty reader) to find them.

These WK's behave badly on a weak battery. Many of the functions you cited as inoperative go through the PCM. If your battery is original, it's definitely time to spring for a new one (once the root cause of your problems is established). If the PCM and other modules do not receive sufficient voltage, they will act stangely. I believe ~10.7 V is the minimum it needs to power up.

Hope it is as simple as a new battery.

My '05 was doing funny things, instrument lights going out, gauges quit working, all the idiot lights flashing and the seatbelt chime dinging constantly ( that one I just watched in amazement!!!). turned out my battery was weak. Put a new one in and all problems went away!! Hope yours is that simple!

It could be a grounding issue. A ground common to the functions you listed. I would do the same and check the battery first. I did a quick look and you may want to check ground G100. It's on page 8w-91-18 in the service manual. You can download a copy here:05-08 Grand Cherokee WK Service Manual.PDF

TXjeep1,
Check voltage across pcm and ground connection and from negative battery terminal and grounding point.
You can also check resistance the same way.
Bad ground or corrosion will create a high resistance fault. The PCM generally grounds from ~5V, so corrosion can be an issue. Check all of the grounds you can find.
