2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil leak

My daughters car when driving you get a smell of burnt oil inside the car when driving.
She had car on lift and was told the oil pan is leaking the gasket. Today I drove car and got the smell of burnt oil.
I got under the car and looked at the pan and can't see any leak.
I also checked the valve covers for leak from the rear and no visible leak.
Seems to be be leaking on the exhaust some place and I cant seem to find any leak.
The oil pan seems to be aluminum so no rot or rust on pan

Any other places to look for an oil leak.
Waiting for warmer weather so I can get under car remove the plastic splash pan and get a better look.

There is also never any oil drips on the ground so I'm puzzled.

Any suggestions please

Do you have the air blowing when you smell it?

Re: 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil leak

I do have the heater motor running when I get the smell of the burnt oil its pretty strong. So I told my daughter to use the internal recycle air and not to bring in any outside air when using the heater for know until I can get under the car and get a better look.

thanks

I would check all the crankcase hoses that route from the oil cap to the breather and the pcv valve hoses and connections. If the crankcase gasses are escaping under the hood, it could make the interior smell pretty bad.

Is there a diagram showing the hoses you mention where I could get so I know what to look for.
The hoses
and the pcv valve and hoses location.

The smell is not always there seems to happen when I start to take of in the forward position and again no leakage of oil on the ground.

Re: 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil leak

Responded to your post in another forum but here it is again.

My 2005 Hemi had two oil leaks that developed around the same mileage as your WK. The first was a leak from the rear of both valve cover gaskets. Replaced those, but still had an occasional oil burning smell. The second leak was the rear main seal leaking, dropping oil onto the front skid which would then blow onto the hot catalytic right behind the skid. Thats why you don't see any oil leaking on the ground. I found a good shop that removed the skid and cleaned up the rear of the engine, bell housing and oil pan areas. They then put a dye in the engine oil. After running it about a week took it back into the shop where it showed the leak was from the rear main seal.

Good luck with your repairs.

Re: 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil leak

thanks

Re: 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil leak

I had a local independent shop quote it out at $700, but they were not 100% sure it was the rear main, or pan. So I took it to a dealership I have high confidence in. They recommended the dye testing first to pinpoint the exact problem. It cost me $900, included an oil change and its warrantied.

I was in the process of buying the 2015 Overland and my son was buying my 2005 Limited, so I wanted it fixed by a competent shop.

Good luck with the repairs.
