2005 Limited Front suspension clunk

I have a 2005 Limited 5.7L (AWD), current mileage is 107,000 and have owned it since new. Very well maintained. I had the front struts replaced about 10, ooo miles back, along with the rear shocks.

In the last couple of months I've noticed a clunking noise when either front wheel or both drop into a road depression, asthe suspension drops down i get a pretty solid clunk/thud before the suspension rebounds upward.

The dealership indicates a possible bushing issue, but is unable to say exactly what bushings are involved. Everything appears tight on inspection.

Any suggestions comments on isolating what front end components might be the contributor are appreciated.

thanks

Re: 2005 Limited Front suspension clunk

I would check the sway bar bushings at the frame, as well as the sway bar end links to start.

Both of these are easy and cheap to replace, and with that mileage it likely wouldn't hurt.

One thing with the sway bar frame bushings - you may need to replace your brackets with an updated model. The 2005 came with 2 sizes of sway bar (31mm and 33mm, I believe), and depending on which one you have will dictate whether the brackets will have to be replaced as well.

That all being said, there are many different front suspension components that could cause the noises you report...could be a lot of things.

Front Mount Differential Bushing needs to be replaced. I'm going to have to get mine replaced again pretty soon.

Your referring to one of the two "isolator bushings" ?

I think the center one was replaced at about 75k miles.

There are actually 3 isolator bushings on the front axle - one on the front that is nice and easy to get to, one on the rear top above the input shaft, and one on the top right.

While I could certainly see one of these being the cause, I would start with the simple and cheap stuff first. A shop will charge quite a bit to replace those bushings. You either have to drop the axle or rotate it around while its in the vehicle to access the top. The bushings also do not like to come out all that easily.

Do you have any noise going between P D and R? Usually those top isolators will clank when shifting - if it's quiet when switching between gears I would suspect other suspension components.

Re: 2005 Limited Front suspension clunk

No noise between shifting between P R D, etc. I had the bad one when shifting in rush hour type traffic between 1 - 2 that proved out to be the isolator they replaced at 75k. I thing it was top center one.

The clunk now is just while driving, hitting a depression, the suspension dropping, thunking on the drop, not so much on the rebound upward.

Re: 2005 Limited Front suspension clunk

i think I may have the same issue on my 05. It is quiet when shifting between park rev neutral and drive but small depressions in the road it makes a clunk. My problem seems to be on the drivers aide only. At least it sounds like the noise is mainly on the drivers side. I suspect mine is the large bushing on the bottom of the strut, due to the fact that it looks a little off as compaired to the passenger side.

Re: 2005 Limited Front suspension clunk

Been there, done that. At 100,000 miles I replaced shocks and struts. Everything was nice. Soon after, some rattling/clunking started whenever I rolled over some minor bumps. So, at 125,000 Miles I decided to go nuts.... After seeing very little movement in the wheel assemblies using the prybar method (I did not use a dial indicator), I just decided to replace both my upper and lower control arms. Holy cow! The lower ball joints were practically flopping, and one of the upper ball joints looked like it was just being held together with the rubber boot.

I also replaced the swaybar links and bushings for good measure (they seemed ok).

While I was in the "mood", I decided to replace the hubs and halfshafts, as well as calipers on all four corners (I had two with ripped piston boots).

Now everything is back together and its quiet as a mouse! (except for a really minor steering rack click - which was being masked by the louder clunks). Now I will do inner and outer tie rods this weekend.

FUN!

My guess is one or more of your ball joints are bad.

Re: 2005 Limited Front suspension clunk

UPDATE:

Had the sway bar end links replaced last week, seems to have corrected the problem.

thanks to all for the comments and advice.
