2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

Can someone point me to a thread talking about replacing the fan clutch or give me some pointers? Mine has developed a brief squeal when first starts. Goes away after 30-45 seconds and fine until engine has been off 3-4 hours. Will also make noise when slowly turning fan with engine off. Some play, only about 1/8 inch so far, when moving the fan back and forth. Is it necessary to remove the fan shroud? Any special tools needed, etc. Looks pretty straightforward except for the close space and of course "breaking the big nut loose". Thanks for any input and direction.

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

you sure its the fan clutch and not the water pump? The water pump is most common.

anyway, for myself I have a pneumatic attachment for my air hammer that knocks them loose no problem. IIRC they are a 32mm fitting and if you can get a big long 32mm wrench sticking it on there and going the direction of fan rotation pound on the end of the wrench, just off side enough to apply shocking force downward and some rotational force too, like if you need to make it go counter clockwise (which is what it is on the 4.7l) pound on the box end of the wrench at like the 1 o' clock position on the wrench.

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

JGC, yes I am sure it is the fan clutch. I get the same "squeal" when turning it by hand when the engine is cold. Also, just to check, I sprayed a small amount of silicone spray onto the shaft and the "squeal" went away. Does the fan shroud have to be removed or can one work around it? Thanks again for your reply.

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

I am pretty sure on the WK it will work out through the top... if it wont, you can just remove the alternator (3 bolts) and that should give you enough space.

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

when i replace mine, i removed my fan shroud, i think it was 4 bolts total, 2 on top and 2 at the bottom. When you get the fan shroud out, leave the belt on and take a large enough wrench to fit over the clutch bolt. Get a long pipe for good leverage and give it a turn, it should come out fairly easy. If i remember correct, the threads are reversed but I'm not positive. Once you get the clutch off and out of the engine bay, remove the 4 bolts holding it to the fan and put the fan on the new clutch and just reverse the process for putting it all back together. Hope this helps a little bit.

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

Thanks JGC and Sam for your helpful responses. I'm also thinking I could drop (not literally) the fan and clutch straight down because it is open at the bottom. Thanks again.

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

It may also be your serpentine belt slipping. You can test it by buying a can of "belt dressing" and spraying it on the belt while the engine is running. If the squeal goes away the next day then thats your problem. Either replace the belt and/or the belt tensioner.

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

Thanks 05WKGuy. I did the belt thing first and determined it wasn't the belt or the pulley. Have isolated it to the fan clutch. Appreciate the reply.

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

Hey no problem. If theres room for the fan to drop from the bottom, you could do that and save yourself a little bit of time and work. If you need any more help just let us know

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

Old thread..I know. which direction should the 32mm be turned to remove..?..this post reads "counter clockwise" as seen from the front ,I presume. If wrench at 1pm you'd have to hit upwards to go that direction, right?

THX

Re: 2005 WK 4.7 V8 Fan Clutch

it goes the same direction that the fan is spun. Off the top of my head it would be counter clockwise, from the front.

1pm and upward is a crappy scenario to try to explain the point , but again if all else fails just go the same direction the fan is driven.

Thanks, that's the consensus I've gotten. CCwise, it is!
