Re: 2006 wk 2098 code keeps comeing up

[QUOTE=robpp;469594]Set Condition:
If the PCM multiplies short term compensation by long term adaptive and a certain percentage is exceeded for two trips, a freeze frame is stored, the MIL illuminates and a trouble code is stored. Two Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

I'm a bit confused by the bolded statements. To make it idiot-proof for me...

I had a shop installed the rear SRT exhaust and the code P2098 keeps popping up. I KNEW it was an exhaust leak which was causing the code. What does the 2 trip fault mean? 2 Times in which they patch up the leaks, i cleared the code and on every 2nd startup the engine light would pop up.

Now i went to another shop and he found a area in which there was no welding at all and welded it up. I disc the neg battery which cleared the code. I have started it up 3 times totaling around 15 miles and light havent come bak at all. I HOPE it stays that way but im interested and still a bit paranoid

A 2-trip fault means that the computer must detect the problem in two consecutive trips before it sets the check engine light. If it only detects the problem once, the code is "pending" - that is, the fault is stored, but the MIL does not illuminate. The 3 good trips to clear the fault mean that in order for the computer to turn off the MIL, there must be 3 consecutive "good" runs (where no problem is detected), at which point the computer will turn off the check engine light. Alternatively (and what usually happens), is that the person that performed the repair clears the code using a DTC reader or pulls the negative battery terminal clearing the code. This erases the computers memory of good and bad trips, and if the problem is fixed the MIL will not come on. IF the problem is still there, after X number of trips with it occurring the MIL will come on again.

It gets a little complicated when you look at what actually constitutes a good "trip" according to the computer, you can't just start the engine, turn it off, and then count that is a "trip". The time running, running conditions, component temperatures, and ECM status monitors all play into it, but in general, driving around for 15minutes and then shutting off will meet these requirements. I believe there are only 1 and 2 trip faults. Obviously 1 trip faults are more serious, and as such warn the driver straight away.

To answer your specific question, if you've had 3 trips and the MIL hasn't illuminated, you should be good.

Re: 2006 wk 2098 code keeps comeing up

everything seems fine, made a few more starts each around 30 mins and no light. BUT...before my first trip i cranked it up wile the exhaust was cold and i did notice a small, pinsize hole in the weld which gave out some smoke but no engine light.

I purchased some exhaust sealer from autozone and dab some on it. I'll start it up tomorow to see how it'll hold up.

Re: 2006 wk 2098 code keeps comeing up

i hope so / im the type that worries alot and this been on my mind for a few days. I still look at the dash often expecting the light to pop but so far so good. The sealer is mighty tough it seems, i would get it welded but ive been bothering my mechanic enough lol. For now everything seems well.

Another question....will the O2 sensor pick up the smallest of small leak 2ft away from it? I noticed a small pinhole near the muffler spitting tiny amounts of water out on the weld job but my mechanic said the o2 sensor wont pick that up. I sealed it incase.
