2007 Grand Cherokee Limited starting issue

2007 Grand Cherokee 4WD Limited. 4.7l motor.

New to the forum. tried doing a search of a similar problem with no luck.

recently purchased this vehicle and am having an intermittent starting issue. On occasion, I will turn the key to the start position and get nothing. engine doesn't turn over. all other electrical function working (windows work, seat adjustment works). Battery checks out. Tried several more times. Still nothing. AAA made a house call and after connecting the battery boost, still nothing. Next day, I decided to try again before having it towed to the shop. Engine turned over and starts immediately. Shut it down and tried 3 more times and it started fine. One start in particular was odd in that I had the key in the start start position and for about 3-4 seconds nothing, then it turned over and started.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 2007 Grand Cherokee Limited starting issue

Welcome to the garage.
Do you hear the faint click of the starter relay while trying to start? If not, you could swap that relay with a same one in the relay box. If that doesn´t change anything, then you could try to start in N instead in P or just wiggle the shift lever a bit. A problem with the park/neutral switch could be the problem. If you do hear the click, then look at the thin wire on the starter motor solenoid. It can make bad contact and prevent the solenoid from energizing. Sometimes just squeezing the terminal or changing it helps.
If this doesn´t help, then the starter motor itself is most probably the problem.

Re: 2007 Grand Cherokee Limited starting issue

hi, I did try moving the gear shift from P to N and it still didn't work. Is this the wire you are referring to? It goes directly from the + battery terminal to the lower part of the motor (I'm assuming the starter). Doesn't that bypass the relay all together?

Re: 2007 Grand Cherokee Limited starting issue

I see you have a hood switch. Does this mean that you have auto start? If so will it start from that? My 2008 has the fobik key and what is known as tip start. When you turn your key to start you are not really activating the starter, you are just sending a message to the pcm which will turn over the motor for 10 seconds or until it starts. You only have to hold the key for a split second and the computer does the rest. Intermittent no starts can get complicated with these computer controlled, canbus operated beasts. If its not just a simple starter wire issue you might need the computer to be scanned (dealer) so they can see if its doing its job. At least if the auto start worked that might indicate a problem in the ignition switch itself.
