2007 WK Front drive shaft problems

My 2007 WK Quadtrac fulltime 4wd/AWD, developed a howling noise at speed. Found that two of the front diff isolators were broken and when shifting into gear when the front drive shaft engaged it lifted the diff up. Apparently from the change in angle on the front drive shaft, the drive shaft got all torn up.

I had heard that you could pull the front drive shaft and drive 2wd. Tried and it won't.

I tried to put the torn up drive shaft back in, but it is so bad it is un-driveable.

I still plan to have drive shaft refurbished, it is about half the price of a new one, but the Jeep will have to sit.

Anyone have anything similar?

repair the front drive shaft with this
Crown Automotive 528534RRK - Front Drive Shaft CV Joint Repair Kit for 05-10 Jeep® Grand Cherokee WK & Commander XK - Quadratec
upon install it needs to be balanced.
how to balance it? sorry i don't know i took it to a well know Hemi shop.
before you remove it it needed to be marked.

I have a vibration, wondering if its the isolators. Did yours do it only at certain speeds? Or constantly and increase with speed?

Re: 2007 WK Front drive shaft problems

I replaced isolator bushings about a year ago. I heard a "clunk" when shifting from P->R, R->D or P->D, basically when torque was applied the front differential rotated and the inside case smacked against the case/frame/Diff. Sometimes when it downshifted into 2nd it would "clunk" too. I replaced them my self on a full Saturday's work. The front diff bushing was fine but the two rear bushing were completely separated. I never had a howling though. Like THEIFNDNIGHT said, howling is likely something to do with your driveshaft beginning to fail, more than likely from a torn boot at the transfer case. I don't think the angle variation would damage it, unless you already have altered it with a lift kit.

Here is the link to my post.

2007 wk clunk when slowing down...?
