2007 WK Random Vibrations

I have a 2007 Grand Cherokee WK with the 4.7l flex fuel motor (101k miles) and leveling kit put on about 30k miles ago. About 2 and a half weeks ago I had 4 new tires put on with a balance and alignment. It drove smooth for a week, but over the past week and a half its been developing a random vibration. It will randomly start shaking in the front end like the wheels are about to fall off and doesn't stop until I come to a complete stop. I cannot reproduce with any set of conditions its completely random. When the vibration happens nothing makes it better unless I come to a complete stop. If I slow down the vibration is there if I speed up the vibration stays the same.

Nothing replicates it. Below is a list of things that have caused it to happen.
  • Driving at 40 mph and then coasting
  • Driving with cruise at 50mph on a smooth road
  • Cruising at 70 on highway - only slight vibration dash isnt shaking

Here is what I have tried to replicate the issue.
  • Driving at a Constant 40mph
  • Getting on highway going from 30-80
  • Hitting bumps followed by smooth road

Things I've checked:
  • Transmission fluid (added half quart with no difference)
  • Checked hubs on both sides of front end
  • Checked tie rods on both sides of front end
  • Checked brake pads/rotors on both sides of front end
  • Driver side CV axle was replaced ~10k miles ago
  • Front struts have about 25k on them

I'm going to crawl under there after work and look for anything that is wrong/worn because with the vibration I'm feeling something has to be visibly wrong. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts?

Re: 2007 WK Random Vibrations

Since this problem started after putting the new tires on, i would first focus on that. Did any of the balancing weights come of? Are the front wheels installed right and the lug nuts torqued to specs?
Was a wheel alignment done after the new tires installed?

Re: 2007 WK Random Vibrations

It was balanced and and aligned right after the tires were put on. I took it back to the tire place yesterday to have them go over the balance to see if that was the culprit. They found a front tire missing a 1oz weight but everything else was in spec. After they replaced the weight, it is still giving the vibration.

Re: 2007 WK Random Vibrations

Is there a common bushing or U-joint that goes bad causing these strange vibrations?

Re: 2007 WK Random Vibrations

Could be front diff bushing gone bad, very common problem on WK. Mine was replaced about 50k miles ago and still holding up.

Had an issue with the parking brakes when I had the rear brakes changed they were ajusted to close and heated up the rear disks randomly. It caused a vibration and got worse when increasing the speed. And some times didn't do anything.

Re: 2007 WK Random Vibrations

Thanks qbert, I'll pop off the back tires and check that tonight.

Since my last post, I have done the following:
  • Replaced Front Sway Bar Bushings
  • Replaced Front Sway Bar Links
  • Replaced Passenger Front Lower Control Arm

I'll be replacing the driver side front lower control arm tonight. Changing everything above did not fix the issue (despite all of those bushings being worn out. Hopefully the driver front LCA is the problem.

Anyone think of anything else I can try?
