2008 Jeep Shutting Down

For the past 3-4 years I have has the same recurring proble with my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.0 diesel. It has been to the shop numerous times, with no solution. While driving, the vehicle will all of a sudden shut down, you can throw it into neutral and it will start right up again. There is no pattern to when this happens, it could be once in 2-4 months or twice a week. It has mostly happened when driving around town BUT for the first time last week it did this while highway driving. I am very concerned, as I worry that one of these days when this happens I am going to get hit. I have tried to come up with exactly what is happening before it shuts down. The only thing that comes to mind is maybe it happens when you take your foot off accelerator and then reaccelerate. It seems it has happened just after going around corner, slowing down to yield etc, but then it did it on the highway. However that day it had been raining lots and there where many potholes in that highway and I am wondering if I did take foot off accelerator and then reaccelerate. I would be most grateful if someone out there knows how to fix this problem!

I had same issue with a 78 Monte Carlo, I know dating myself with that, but it was a tear in the gasket head. So oil would rush into cylinder when I let off gas, turned corner, etc. I had to throw it into nuetral to Turn corners/ idle at light and rev the engine. Tell, tale sign was black smoke from exhaust when it started. That was my clue to fix it, not a diy job unless lots of experience

It is a semi-known problem and the most reliable solution to fix a plethora of different problems is to replace the crank position sensor(CPS). It is a small inexpensive sensor that can cause an owner lots of grief. I've done the same on mine.

I have an 07 that has had the same issue. The was a recall on the ignition switch. Contact your local dealer to see if your jeep was part of the recall. Also they had a recall on the 4wd system. They will repair both at no cost.
