Ok so there about a million threads on here and other forums about front end noises but I haven't found the answer I'm looking for and didn't want to hijack someone else's thread. So here goes...
I had an HD OME lift kit installed in November and have had a somewhat annoying noise pop up in the front end ever since, typically it feels like it's on the drivers side. It sounds like a hollow light knocking when traveling around 30mph and the noises can be felt in the pedal as well. Not really noticeable at higher speeds or with the radio turned up. Not sure if it's related, but there's also a loud clunk sound when traveling slowly and then slamming in the brakes. Possibly related.
In the last week I had both front upper control arms replaced with JBA control arms because the dealer said the ball joint on the drivers side was bad (I thought I'd do them both at the same time). They also swapped the ball joint on the front lower control arm on the drivers side and that was supposed to fix the issue. Well I drove it out of the shop and it sounds just like it did when I brought it in.
So now I've just replaced the sway bar end links and sway bar bushings myself today. Still no change.
I've also previously tightened the strut rod nuts as far down as I could get them.
I've tried just about everything I've read so far. Any other thoughts out there?
I'll accept the fact it won't feel stock with the lift kit but there shouldn't be any clunks or rattles.
Any chance it could actually be the strut itself? Running out of options on this one...
I had 1 of them replaced back in November (one of the cheaper ones, not the front one). I suppose I can start there and have them but in new ones for the other locations.
I strapped my gopro underneatha and I'll upload the video shortly once I cut it down to show the noise I'm talking about. Sounds like a consistent hollow clunking. From the video, nothing appears to be loose or slipping though so I'm not quite sure if it's much help. I'll post that tomorrow.
In the meantime, I might look at the brake calipers and make sure those 2 bolts are tight. This is probably a long shot at solving the issue but I've seen a few people with front end noises resolve them by tightening those 2 bolts
I attached a long video that I took the other day. You can hear the low thud/hollow clunk pretty consistently (I had to use headphones to really hear it, otherwise it was just getting lost). Starting from a stop shows the noises as well. You can also hear some funny stuff going on at the end when I'm parking.
Not much to work with here but it gives you an idea. I'lly have to swap the camera to the passenger side and try a few other camera angles once this snow goes away.
So I took it back in to the shop that installed the JBA UCAs and asked them to look it over again (basically I left them the week previously with the same noise that I went there with thus nothing was solved and my pockets were emptied). At the end of the day I hear a few things back from them:
1. the lower control arm ball joint on the passenger side is bad (why this wasnt done or caught the first time around, I dont know).
2. the UCA ball joints are bad and they want to put in the mopar UCAs. They basically claim that the new parts arent working and need to come out.
The saga continues still with no real resolution...
Did you get the noise fix? I had clunking noise like yours did upper control arm and new shocks the shop could not help, but I fixed my noise by torqueing all the bolts on the front sway bar down with the weight of the jeep on the ground and it all tighten up no noise.
Also tighten the strut bolts too. If they tighten it in the air it will not tighten the bolts right I do not know why suspension shop do not know how to tighten bolts correct, oh well
