4 wheel drive problem

2006 Grand Cherokee w/ quadra drive II. Did some checking with ohm meter and indicated front axle actuator was bad. Changed out actuator and harness. The wires to the actuator just fell off as I removed the harness and were black and tarnished as if they had been broken for a while. Reassembled and filled with gear oil but service 4 wheel drive system light is still on and no shift to 4 low. Does it take several drive cycles before light goes out or something else causing problem?
