5.7 No Start

I just purchased this 2010 WK on Saturday 11/21. It is a one owner, 67k, with a perfect maintenance record. I successfully drove the 700 miles home with no problems. However, Sunday 11/22 I experienced a flashing CEL followed by the engine dying. I pulled over on the side of the road and was unable to restart the Jeep. It'll turn over just fine but not start. I had it towed home and pulled the codes.

P0562 - Low voltage. It was slow to start after sitting for a month before selling. I'd assume that's what this is from
P0306 - Cyl 6 misfire... Going out on a limb that this is the culprit

The P0306 code is for a cylinder #6 misfire I believe. Just to be safe I ruled out the battery. Had the optima tested and it was fine. After I verified that, I cleared the DTC's, discharged the system and gave it a crank. Here is the result, did not generate any DTC's after this. I have not had time to dig into it further. Thought maybe a bad coil but since it will not start at all I can't just swap it to another cylinder.

Rig in question

Re: 5.7 No Start

I put in a new battery, which I had already ruled out. However, I wanted the correct size, as the 34R was not very secure in the tray. My NorthStar showed up damaged from QT and they are out of stock with the manufacturer for at least two weeks. So I just picked up an Autocraft Platinum AGM. I replaced both terminals, the negative was in poor shape.

After that I put in new cam and crank position sensors. They are cheap enough and a bad crank, which is a common failure on these, could cause my no start issue. Unfortunately that was not it. I am pretty settled on it being a fuel issue at this point. Now the pump is priming, the reason I was unsure initially is because the pump does not prime as my '04 WJ does. The pump actually primes when you unlock the Jeep via the remote. This is definitely a much better design as most people do no let their pump prime when they get in the vehicle, they just turn it full over. I normally hit the remote a good distance away from the rig. But I happened to be standing right next to is today while unlocking and I heard it prime. Just to confirm I locked it, crawled under and unlocked it, and it definitely kicks on.

Now the reason I think fuel is when I turned it over I gave it a little gas and actually got it to start. As soon as I let off it died. So I did it again and this time kept feathering the gas and it stayed running, but every time I let off it would want to die. I ran it this way long enough for my flashing CEL to come back (maybe 20 seconds) and turned it off immediately. Pulled the code and got P0300, multiple cylinder misfire. Unfortunately the 5.7 does not have a Schrader so I cannot hook up my gauge. Not sure where to go from here.

Ruled out the pump relay, swapped it with the A/C clutch.

It might not be bad time to do a compression test. Also gives you a chance to take a look at the plugs while you're at it.

Re: 5.7 No Start

When was the last time you changed the sparks (usually there good for 30k and only use champions)? Sounds almost like a spark related issue. I would Check your plugs first to make sure there not fouled. Believe me, new plugs will make a huge difference if in fact that is your issue.

If your plugs look anywhere near like your battery terminals than that may be the problem.

Re: 5.7 No Start

I would recommend starting with a compression test and plugs. If there were a part of the fuel injection system that were to fail my guess would be the injectors rather than the fuel pump.

Re: 5.7 No Start

Since you have multiple misfire code now, the problem is something affecting more cylinders. Would not expect fuel injector, because they donīt get bad at the same time normally and one bad injector will not prevent it from idling, eventhough it will be a bit rough.
Do you have a scanner which can show live data? If so, you can check the LTFT figures from both banks (long term fuel trim) When you have a too low fuel pressure, these trim figures will go up to +30 more or less and eventually, when max trim is reached, lean misfires can occur. Ofcourse the engine will need to run some 20 seconds or so to be in closed loop mode. Normal LTFT figure will be a single digit number.
If you donīt have a scanner, but do have a smartphone, then it could be wise to buy a cheap bluetooth or a bit more expensive wifi dongle from e-bay and download the free Torque app. You can then see fault codes, errase them and see many live data.

Re: 5.7 No Start

Ended up taking it to the dealer. It has been in the teens lately and I was running out of time to mess with it. The cylinder 6 valve spring broke on the exhaust valve. The valve is seized in the head and will not move. Dealer thinks a new head is in order, $3,200. I am not so sure because they did not actually remove the head. They just replaced the broken spring and saw it was seized. I am guessing bent valve at a minimum.
