6+ weeks - still not fixed, '07 5.7 just dies

So we have a 2007 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.7. Right at about 35,000 it conveniently started developing this wonderful habit of shutting off randomly at exactly when you don't want it to without any warning and sometimes struggle to start back up. One code that keeps showing up every time they give it back telling me its fixed (at the dealership it shows and I can't get a good story as to why they don't seem to care about it) is PO884 but from the explanation of this code by LTrainGC in another one of my threads here (and thank you for that) it seems to be the result of the vehicle bump starting itself after the issue occurs in my opinion.

It will die out when pulling away from a stop at light throttle leaving you dead in the water while turning across oncoming traffic, pulling into traffic, etc. The eye opener for me is when it dies at 70 MPH and restarts itself... I've never seen an automatic bump start itself but I guess it happens at those speeds. Its an eye opener because it basically jerks you into the seat belt harness with enough of a blow that the belt locks you in position.

So we started this dance about 6 months ago with the dealership. The tranny cooler lines were leaking so I replaced them to convince them it was not shutting off due to low fluid which I kept a religious eye on. They wanted me to pay to have the throttle body cleaned out so I did that myself. Normal maintenance is followed rather closely in my garage so its up to date on the normal everything. Lately they've started trying to get me to throw parts at it with some rather amazing quotes so I've been pulling parts and doing my own labor when possible, the latest being the ignition switch before we took it back again with no luck. The mechanic went for a ride with her the last time she took it in and he immediately said it was too unsafe to drive so they put her in a POS clapped out Dodge Stratus that is free at least. A good thing considering we haven't seen our Jeep for more than 2 miles in what I believe will be 7 weeks later this week.

The dealership has been great to us in all consideration, we're at 42,000 miles I believe so they've been rather nice with giving us the free loaner while they bang their heads against the wall but its beyond a little old at this point. The service manager has been taking the Jeep home at night when he thinks its fixed to give it a long test ride 2-3 times when they thought they had it wrapped, but each time we've touched the keys we've either not made it out of the parking space or the parking lot before it stalls out again.

We contacted Chrysler who jumped on board to "help" and the last part thrown at it was the forward control module that they wanted $600 for and gave us a "deal" by only saying it would cost us $150 to swap out (the ECM was flashed and then replaced earlier in this game). Assured that would be the resolution, we went for it and got the call today - no dice. So, here we are pushing week 7 with what will be week 8 and 9 if they don't get it back to us before our vacation and to say we're fed up is an understatement. Jeep and Chrysler still can't produce a list of parts covered and not covered by the BS Lifetime Powertrain Warranty that sold me on the truck as a heck of a good idea despite having quite a few problems with my Ram. So, my guess is that Jeep would probably cut me a heck of a deal to buy it back off me and sell us a 2011 model - but I've got to be honest, I'm looking at everything but if they can't fix this one because I was looking forward to that payment book disappearing for a while on her ride since I just picked up a new GMC 2500 for my business.

Anyone else had any similar "it couldn't be fixed" stories with a happy ending? I love this Jeep's looks, options, and all around performance - but with it being her ride, I can't have her getting broadsided by a big truck because Jeep can't sort out the bug in this thing.

WOW Greg I've never heard of that problem till you just said it that does seem to be a heap of problems ur dealing with and sorry bout ur inconvenience ...

hope they get it figured out and bout getting into a new ride, i say go for it sux u'll have more payments this time around

There is a massive thread over on the Dodge Nitro forums about this issue.

The only solution they have found so far was to tear the old wiring harness out and replace it along with a few modules that wouldn't communicate after the new harness was installed.

Did they ever change the EGR valve? Have they checked the wiring (power and ground) to the TCM portion of the PCM? Traced the wires to their circuit protection (fuse) and grounding point?

Software update fixed my issue. I had the exact same problems.... tranny cooler leak, stalling.. but I complained loud enough and a software update fixed the issue. Not sure on the specifics...

I'm going to call about the specifics tomorrow, but she got a message today saying they wanted to replace the wiring harness so I guess they're heading down the same road.

They're talking to Chrysler before doing anything - unfortunately the 36k warranty expired since this started happening 6k miles / 8 months ago when first reported but no way in hell I'm paying for that much work out of pocket, they can have it back before I'll pay that on a 2 year old vehicle.

Screw that... Its documented pretty well on forums that the harness is the problem. IMO you should bitch that the parts installed didn't do anything and you should be refunded. Hell my personal shop has done that, not a big dealer, this is a small town tire repair/shop. Part doesn't fix the issue its on their dime not yours. THEN make them pay for the harness installation. You've been without your vehicle for 6 weeks, you've been renting a replacement for that long as well too? Hell yeah you should bitch up a storm.

To the OP, and any others that may have missed it. The throttle body on the WK (definitely the hemi, I believe all others as well...someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong), is non-serviceable and has to be replaced as an entire unit, that is, it should not require and/or be cleaned.

I'm not putting another dime in this Jeep making payments on a warranty - I've already mailed one and what will soon be two payments for a vehicle I'm not driving, they're lucky to get those out of me for a Jeep I don't have. If they can't fix it I'll roll the dice and see if it will survive a test drive during a trade in at another brand's dealership. While a warranty would be nice, what would be even nicer is not having to drop $1500 on one so I know I'm covered when the thing goes in the shop for two months again when it hits three years old... screw that.

The dealership is very cool with all of this - they made some recommendations up front and when I told them I'd spin the wrenches for parts not covered they gave me a discount on the parts and didn't try to blame my technical skills when the problem wasn't corrected by it so I'm not going to beat them up. They're doing battle with Chrysler for me actually and told me they don't want me to pay for the harness, we're just waiting to hear back from the big cheese.

As for the rental - if I had paid for a car for a week I'd be pitching a fit, but they handed her keys to a clapped out Stratus from their own sales loaner program and haven't flinched either time they had to hand them back over when she tried to bring the Jeep home without success. Now when they think they have fixed the issue the service manager takes the Jeep home for a night to give it a long test run to make sure it really fixed it and has too many times realized it was all for nothing. They're last attempt that was supposed to cost me $150 didn't cost me a dime, all I did was ask "Since you put that FCM on it and it didn't fix anything, I assume you took it back off right?" They said they left it on but no charge would be headed my way for it.

The only thing that has me concerned is we're leaving town for a week so after today its going to be on them to keep up on it without us nagging them. Since we're skipping town for a week they asked us if they could have the loaner back while we're gone which is fine by me - the back window has been stuck down for a week and we're lucky it hasn't rained since, I just hope they have the Jeep ready when we return or are ready to give over another loaner for what will then be pushing 8 weeks...
