All lights in the instrument panel suddenly went on and off

Hi,

All the lights (Check engine, transmission, abs, auto traction, etc, etc, etc) in my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 Laredo's instrument panel suddenly went on and off twice while driving (First time ever).... And then the auto traction light as well as the ESP/BAS lights stayed on...

I parked the Jeep, turned it off and drove off after the gym and they never went back on again...but it's still a concern.

Is there any chance this could have happened due to the Sun throwing a major solar flare a few days ago? The weather up here hit 15 celsius as well today, from an average of 0-5 lately..

Weird stuff, has this happened to anyone before?

What's funnier is that an employee of mine just called me and they said they may not be able to go to work because their engine light came on...but that's probably just a coincidence? Or Not?

Re: All lights in the instrument panel suddenly went on and off

I read this somewhere, I wonder if it's my problem:

"There is a sensor in each wheel hub that monitors data needed for the systems to operate. When BOTH warning indicators come on, it usually indicates a problem with one of the sensors. When the problem is intermittant, it is usually a bad connection or a chaffed wire to a sensor. The proper response to this problem is to disconnect the wiring harness plug at each of the (4) wheel sensors - check for wire damage (chaffing, bare wire, kinking, etc) - check for dirt and/or corrosion - clean both the plug and contacts - use liberal dielectic grease - and reinstall the plug. This is a common problem on modern cars with ABS, traction control, stability control, etc. when you live in areas of the country with higher moisture, snow and use of roadway salts and chemicals for ice and snow removal. It is also a possibility that one of your hubs is failing, but that would be unusual until the vehicle has 50-60K miles on it. I would take it back to where you had the service done and have them check the connectors and wiring. You have to figure that having exposed wires running to an area of the car that moves up and down (suspension), rotates (front - steering), exposed to heat, cold, elements and flying road objects - there will eventually be a failure. I have no idea why the dealer would think the problem is in the steering column/system/clockspring."

Re: All lights in the instrument panel suddenly went on and off

Now that I'm reading more it could also be due to a corroded connector in the wiring harness beneath the carpet on the drivers side front or a problem with the clockspring.

Could it have also been the transfer case? I might have smelled some type of oil smell but than again was in traffic...also saw some weird oil like substance on the floor under the front drive side door, but that could have been from the krown anti rust treatment..

Lights have not shown up again since this happened...would you still be concerned? All seems normal.

Re: All lights in the instrument panel suddenly went on and off

My '05 also did that a couple of times, driving down the road and the dash lights go out for several seconds, also no gauges, then pop right back on. Also, started it one night, all dash lights are flashing, seatbelt/door chime chiming away furiously, no gauges. I just sat there and watched the light show!!! LOL. Then all the warning lights go off, and it had set a code. Checked the code with the torque app on my phone. It said left rear o2 sensor was out of range. Cleared the code, checked o2 operation and everything was fine.

Long story short, the battery was going bad. It was causing some REALLY weird things to happen: dash lights flickering, seat heaters wouldn't work for 2 to 3 minutes after a start, then the things I described above started happening. Changed the battery 6 months ago, everything disappeared!!!

Hope this helps!

Thanks, it still has not done it again, so hopefully it was some small glitch... I also changed the battery in late 2010.

Re: All lights in the instrument panel suddenly went on and off

i have read that the ignition switch on these rigs are very touchy too much weight from excessive amounts of keys or other things on youre keyring can cause the problems you mentioned. if you have alot of stuff on youre ring try getting rid of some of it, additionally you might be able to replicate the problem by wiggleing the key in the ignition while its running.

Re: All lights in the instrument panel suddenly went on and off

OK I've had this issue and did a TON of research on JG to find the issues for when it happened, and although there are already countless threads addressing this issue, I'll give you the 3 main causes for it:

1) Battery slowly dying. Batteries usually run $100 and change. Super easy install with 10mm ratchet.
2) Multifunction stalk needs to be replaced (this fixed my issue instantly, after it slowly got worse and worse and got dangerous where the headlights would go off too). I got my stalk which was more expensive b/c of auto lights and fogs, for $110 from J4J (one of our vendors). Easy install with Torx heads.
3) Ignition Control Module needs to be replaced. I hear this part is $20 and change from RockAuto. Easy install with Torx heads.

Re: All lights in the instrument panel suddenly went on and off

Ok, so 10+ days have passed and it never did it again.

But! I just noticed my Passenger Side Rear Tail light brake lamp is no longer working when I press on the brakes.

Last year I had the Driver side one go.

Perhaps, when the passenger side went, some electrical craziness happened and I have all my Instrument Panel lights go off and on?
