Bad starter connection

I got into a bit of a fender bender a while back. Nothing serious. Everything was okay. But a little while after I started having problems starting. My dad and I got into it a bit to diagnose the issue for a loose bad connection to the starter. We did the best we could to reach up to it with a long flat head. Its still a bit funny. We can fix the connection not a problem. THE PROBLEM: we can't reach the damn thing. I have a 5.7l 05 Grand. Is there a way to easily access it? Even if it had to be replaced seems impossible. HELP! Thanks in advance.

Re: Bad starter connection

It's a tight fit in there, and not easy to get to.

According to the FSM, you can get access to it just by removing the support bracket between the front axle and the side of the transmission out of the way (Unbolt at trans., and then pry it over).

I found it a whole lot easier just to remove the front drive shaft to get enough room in there to work.

Once you can get at the 2 starter bolts, remove them, then pull the starter towards the front of the jeep, until the nose of the starter pinion clears the housing.

Then, you should be able to tilt it down and access the nut that secures the positive battery cable.

Don't forget to disconnect the negative at the battery first.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the walk through. Thankfully I have the day off to take a look at this. Let you know how it goes.

Re: Bad starter connection

Any luck? I just changed my starter on my 3.7 WK. It was such a pain in the balls, nevermind doing it on a gravel driveway. Reaching the two bolts was a project in itself, and had to buy a breaker bar to loosen them. My plastic skid plate was already removed (since it did nothing) and I didnt seem to have the supposed support bracket. A 15mm socket removed the two starter bolts, then a 13mm was used to remove the positive cable from the solenoid then I just kept squeezing the starter connection until it came loose. Removing the starter was another project, it was like a puzzle figureing out how it will come out. From what I here alot of people remove the drive shaft, but with ALOT of patience I got mine out and the new starter took me less than 30 min to put back it. Now im sure I can replace the starter in about an hour since i've done it already.
