Bad starter? Erratic ignition issues

Over the last six months my 105k 2007 wk 5.7L has experienced an ignition issue randomly. It will start fine, drive, park turn it off. Go. To turn it on a few minutes later and it gives a single click or no noise and nothing happens. But then on the 2nd or 3rd turn, the car starts and drives without issues. It does this once every few weeks. Today it happened on a cold start, several turns of the key and nothing happened. Didn't turn, no struggle, then sixth try or so, it started and drove fine, restarted 15min later and drove without other issues.

Are these the signs of a bad starter?

Re: Bad starter? Erratic ignition issues

Can be a bad starter solenoid, but first check the small wire connector to the starter solenoid. Well known to make bad contact and cause starting problems.
There are other possibilities as well. Do you always hear the starter relay clicking when trying to start? If yes, then the above applies.
If no, then the problem can be with the starter relay, ignition switch or park/neutral safety switch inside the transmission.

Mine ('05 5.7) did the same thing for several weeks until it stopped starting altogether. Replaced the starter and haven't had an issue since. That was 2 years and about 35,000 miles ago.

Re: Bad starter? Erratic ignition issues

Okay so it happened again this morning on a cold start. I listened and it clicks once when I turn the ignition to "ON" but nothing happens, no turnover or sound.... Nothing. Then there's another click as I turn the key off.

On, off about ten times then it started.

Re: Bad starter? Erratic ignition issues

Same problem this morning with the single click. Three times it did turn over but just turned and turned and didn't ignite and I had to turn the engine off and retry.

After a couple minutes it turned and started.

Any ideas given that it would turn now but not fire? That's new.

Where/how do I locate this?

Re: Bad starter? Erratic ignition issues

It has been over a year since I did mine but I want to say the wire that is known for a loose/corroded connection is a yellow wire. Don't quote me on that. It's a tight squeeze to get to it.

In my case I didn't get out of it so easy. Mine was doing the same thing as yours until it finally just stopped cranking all together and I had to get a new starter. New starter was only about $100 I think and then with a discount got it for around $70 I want to say. And holy cow what a pain in the a$$ job it was. I'm an experienced mechanic and have done many starters but this jeep was a real pain. Very tight space. BUT eventually with persistence I got the job done and it has started perfectly ever since!.

Hope you get it figured out!.

You mean the wire on the starter solenoid? Just find the starter motor first. The starter motor consist of the electrical motor, which is the larger cylindrical part, and the starter solenoid, which is the smaller cylindrical part and which has two large studs with wires connected to it, and one smaller wire, which is the one who should activate the solenoid. This smaller wire connector seems to be the problem in many cases, eventhough the problem can be with the solenoid itself as well. Since shipping costs and taxes for me more then double the price of each part, i try to repair before replacing. The starter solenoid can easily be replaced for around USD 25.
