Balancer/Damper issues

im trying to install a new damper and its not cooperating. the old one came off,ok-ish, but the new one is being difficult- I cant keep the crank from spinning. I got an instalation tool from autozone... NO-GO my crank doesnt have threads to the end

we finally got it to pull on with the bolt, but we cant hold it tight enough to fully seat/torque it.we used the old belt wrapped around the pulley with 3 of us holding it, but we couldnt. we tried a air ratchet -not impact, but it will only go about 1 turn -both ways. cant even get it to come off! I'm about to flip my lid, i've never had trouble doing this, any ideas? I REALLY dont want to have to pull the rad/fan and use a impact gun... help!

Re: Balancer/Damper issues

I'll agree, don't remove the radiator/fan assemblies, unless you absolutely have to. They are a genuine pain in the a$$, both off and on. Are you replacing with a stock damper/pulley, or installing an underdrive setup? Are you using a new bolt? Torquing that bolt to 129 ft. lbs. isn't the easiest, no matter how you do it. I know, on mine with the rad/fan off, I used a pry bar between the spokes of the pulley and wedged it against the front cover to hold it from moving while torquing. Don't know if you can get in there with everything in place though. I haven't ever paid any attention, but can you gain access to the flywheel/flexplate? Is there a cover hiding it? If so, you may be able to wedge a screwdriver (unless you have a flywheel turning tool) between the flexplate ring gear teeth and trans. housing, and then torque the crank bolt. The problem with using an impact gun is you won't know where you're at torque wise. Let us know how you end up getting it done.

Re: Balancer/Damper issues

Thanks for the response. Yes,I got a underdrive pulley. Dont know if i can get anything through it. The flywheel is a great idea, THANKS ,ill check after work. I ment to use the impact to remove the bolt. I did get a new bolt, but was using the old one to press the pulley, and it got stuck.

Re: Balancer/Damper issues

Don't think that'll work. I can't believe that there is no access under there. How do they get to the converter bolts that connect it to the flexplate when removing the trans? There has to be some access somewhere??? Next step though (which won't be fun) is remove the starter and wedge the flexplate ring gear there. Someone that's had the starter off can tell you how much work that will be. I'll check the FSM to see what it says about the tranny access.

Re: Balancer/Damper issues

This doesn't look encouraging!! See No.'s 9 and 10. If you can't wedge in the starter recess, looks like you may be taking the radiator/fan out. If you can access one of the converter bolts after removing that "structural" cover, maybe you can wedge against the bolt and ???. This is getting interesting. Keep us posted.

5. Remove the engine to transmission structural cover
(1), 5.7L shown. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE/ENGINE
BLOCK/STRUCTURAL COVER - REMOVAL)
6. Remove the torque converter bolts (3).
7. Remove the exhaust support bracket from the rear
of the transmission.
8. Disconnect and lower or remove any necessary
exhaust components.
9. Remove the starter motor.
10. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter
bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts
one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket
wrench on dampener bolt.

Re: Balancer/Damper issues

Well, after pulling the fan/ rad out, the only prybar we could fit through the pulley bent. ( trying to hold it). Using an impact gun, i went slow back-n-forth and finally got the bolt out. BUT , it has some bad threads @ the end. I cleaned the crank with compressed air & brake cleaner and only got dust/ shavings, not pulled threads. I hope thats a good sign. I'm gonna try n find a tap tomorrow to clean it up( crank) . Being the end was screwed up, im thinking about cutting some off of the new bolt so as to not get into where i know its bad.... What do you think?

Re: Balancer/Damper issues

Was the new bolt exactly like the old one....mainly length? How much are you thinking of cutting off the new one? Don't think I'd go more than 1/4 in. or so. I think you're on the right (and better) track by running a thread chaser tap into it. If the new bolt is now boogered up, I'd bite the bullet and go get another new one. I know that both of mine went right in with no problem.....so far. Whatever you do, don't use anti-seize or other thread lube on it.

How did you like pulling the radiator and fan? Quite a pain and a mess??

Re: Balancer/Damper issues

The new bolt is fine, but goes in tight right from the start. The bolts are a perfect match. When i get home ill post a pic of the old bolt, was thinking of cutting 1/2" off. Its a good 4" long from the washer to the end. Trying to find a tap now, no luck so far. Ive never seen a tap as long as this bolt, thats another reason im thinking fo cutting it.

- yeah, pretty good mess. Way tight fit, with the bumper on anyway.

Re: Balancer/Damper issues

old bolt ...found a tap, but just a regular one, not a chase....not a popular size i guess
