BANG! is my transmission going? or is the dealer sitting on their thumbs?

So i have a 06 grand Cherokee limited 5.7, with 53k and the transmission light came on..i was wheeling and had a stick break the transmission moduler sensor under. basically it tells the jeep to shift. i fixed it, but water shorted the wire and i herd a loud bang. it did it at 60mph when down shifting to 4th gear. it has done it probably 10 times. had it sodered heat shrinked and all sealed up now. reset the computer, and dealer diagnosed it as bad wheel sensors, $350 later, its not that and noww they think its the valve body. i have a great amount of automotive knoledge, but i just can think of whats going on. ohh the code that was thrown is missing or skipping 4th gear? any thought, it would be greatly appreciated, i think the dealer is just sitting on their thumbs bc they have no idea what to do..FML

I would recheck the wiring to be sure that the wire which should activate the 4th gear solenoid doesn´t have an open circuit (maybe a broken wire inside the insulation?). Does your jeep has the 5-45RFE tranny?

Re: BANG! is my transmission going? or is the dealer sitting on their thumbs?

im not to sure what tranny i have on it, but talked to the dealer and if its not the valve body after they replace it they will pay for that. its when you are crusin at 60mph and slowly accelerate till it down shifts. i know if the flow in valve body is being restricted i could be that, but im thinking did something internal get damaged from this like the clutch pack, check valve. what normally happens to a bad valve body? or actually how would a valve body go bad?

Re: BANG! is my transmission going? or is the dealer sitting on their thumbs?

You probably have the 5-45RFE transmission. Was the wiring to the transmission solenoid pack damaged by the stick or was it a speed sensor wire? At least its the solenoid pack which let all the hydraulic switching happen inside the tranny. I can not believe that the dealer want to change the valve body, because there is not that much in there what can break, it is probably the solenoid pack what they want to change, right? The valve body is merely a bunch of fluid channels which will guide the fluid to the respective clutch packs. There are only some accumulators in there, a manual valve and a solenoid switch valve.

thanx, you by far have been the best help. ill have to look into it. i started laughing when they told me the valve body was damaged. if their was something wrong with that, im pretty sure it would have burned up by now. iknow the next thing they would say is i need a new tranny bc they are a too stupid.

There is quite a bit that can fail in a valve body. Multiple valves, check balls, electrical contacts that can all fail.

Easy on the name calling, its people with this attitude that honestly have me looking to get out if this industry trying to bring peoples view on mechanics up is not working, its just bringing me down. if we are all so stupid why dont you do it yourself?

I, for one, am certainly appreciative of all the real pros that are not only willing to work on my vehicle when I bring it in with a problem that I can't tackle myself - but also are willing to spend some of their time off work to continue to help people out.

I make my living working on the human brain...and there are parts of my vehicle I feel are too complicated for me to try and fix myself!

i didnt mean to come off like a snot, i would do it my self if i had a lift, so if this doesnt work i have a shop where i took my auto's degree. and will be replacing/ investigating what went wrong. i just feel like the dealer where i took it, are a bunch of goones becasue i had more knoledge about stuff than what they were telling me. like the transmission control modulure sensor. they told me i couldnt buy just the connector piece, i went to another dealer and got it. and my friend had work done on their car there and the interrior was all cut up like the mechanic had tools in their back pocket. i just want my baby back, its been gone for about two weeks, and i hav had her for a year. just very irratable.
