Blown Head Gasket? 05 4.7L

My engine oil light came on yesterday. I checked the oil and its barely got any in it. (625 miles till service due) all my coolant in the reservoir is gone and it seems like its running hotter then normal. I also have the milky residue in the oil fill cap. Alot of it. Is my head gasket blown? I want to bring it to the dealership but i want to have an idea first. Its never burned this much oil before and never been low on coolant. But i did not see/smell any funny exhaust and i have not seen it over heat yet. Last time i was at the dealership they did say it needs a fan clutch but did not say immediately or this will happen just it needs replacing. I have not drained the oil yet or pulled any spark plugs or done any more research. Its 10* out and were due for 12-18" of snow tonight till friday.

hmmm....youre losing it somewhere. No leaks found? No misfires or check engines?

Re: Blown Head Gasket? 05 4.7L

No puddles or leaks that i can find. Ive owned this jeep since '09 and used mobil 1 at 6k intervals and never ever burned oil like this. The coolant has never been empty either. Though i have not drained to oil yet or checked the radiator yet. There is barely enough oil on the dip stick to tell it has any oil in it and my exhaust is not smelly or colored. I do need a fan clutch but it has not over heated yet. It also needs a pcv valve because i broke it last oil change and just tapped the cracked part and forgot about it.

Re: Blown Head Gasket? 05 4.7L

That is normal buildup in your motor. For my 4.7l I did 5k mile oil changes on synthetic but I also monitored my oil level. I found on conventional oil I would get to about 2-2.5k miles and my oil level was just as full as the day I did the oil change. but in that last .5-1k miles I would lose a quart. Religiously.

burning a bit of oil is not an indication of impending doom, its normal for an engine to consume some oil and 6k mile oil changes is well within Chryslers ridiculous tolerances for oil consumption to leave you with NO oil in your engine between oil changes. Just keep an eye on it.

You probably do have a leak somewhere, radiator, water pump, radiator hoses, front cover.... all pretty common on the 4.7l I would do a pressure test on the cooling system, you can get a stant pressure tester for less than 100 bucks (closer to 50?) and they work great.

Also, the oil pressure sender on Chryslers is a pretty common failure which causes the oil light to turn on randomly. its right above the oil filter and may be worth inspecting... if you have any oil in the connector replace the sensor! Having said that, mine on my jeep went bad without leaking a drop of anything externally, not even weeping into the connector.

Good man for catching these things, your being a good car owner... just keep an eye on them!

Also, just for clarification, you say its "running hotter" by hotter do you mean the gauge is just dead nuts in the middle or its actually creeping over the center line?

Re: Blown Head Gasket? 05 4.7L

Thanks for all your input. Ive ruled out the HG at the moment. Its about middle on the temp which can be attributed to my fan clutch that i need to replace this weekend. Im also going to change the oil, pcv valve and top off the coolant and see how things go from there. Then once i get my tax return ill be doing 4 new tires, all new brakes new bilstein rear shocks and rear wiper and arm. Ill also check and see if im due for any tune up items. I also switched to mobil 1 high mileage full synthetic from standard mobil 1 and a mopar filter and ill go back to 3k mile oil change intervals.

Re: Blown Head Gasket? 05 4.7L

FWIW, the oil pressure sender on Mopars is only slightly less reliable than the temperature sender.

I think I'd add oil and coolant, and park over a clean snowbank, or use white cardboard in the garage and cross fingers. If not obvious, pick up water soluble and oil soluble dye and add.

Re: Blown Head Gasket? 05 4.7L

Personally I would stay away from high mileage oils... I will admit that this is only because I have been told many of the high mileage oils don't meet current oil standards. I have been told that they contain things to cause seal swelling (what oil stop leaks do) which is good and great except a fatter worn out seal is not going to make it actually seal any better, its just going to wear it out faster. Does it mean your motor is going to explode? no. Just my preference. There are plenty of 1/2 a million mile rigs out there that got there happily on conventional oil.

Again, this is all hearsay, if you would like to look into it for yourself, by all means! Feel free to put me in my place too! Still wont convince me to use the stuff ha ha.
