Just got in the GC at lunch today and the A/C is not blowing cold - have almost 100K miles on my 2010. Can we recharge the A/C ourselves or is this a dealer service?
You can, but it is a closed system. If you have lost a charge, you have a leak. No other explanation.
Also, it may not be a low charge but some other problem with the ac. Many places do free checks of the ac system, and it may point you in the right direction.
I dunno if that BtoB would cover maintenance such as an A/C check and recharge.
It may be a sealed system, but loss of charge happens on pretty much any system as they get older.
Yes, you can easily recharge a system, but if you have to ask, it is probably not a good idea. You would want a good manifold setup plus the refrigerant, but also protective eye wear and hand wear--and help from a qualified tech the first time.
Hook the typical can up to the output side of the compressor and it can make a pretty good dent in your hood--not to mention you. Still, it isn't rocket science and is really no more dangerous than other high-risk work on a vehicle.
A good shop will leak detect the system from big leaks, for you for somewhere in the range of $100 to $150.
Go down to the local auto parts store and pick up a can of a/c pro and read the directions its easy. It hooks up to the low side pressure port, and you just squeeze the trigger while shaking the bottle stopping to check the pressure. Im sure someone at the store can help you if you need it. If it looses cooling ability again you have a leak that needs to get checked out.
