Check Engine Lite

I have 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 53k miles. CEL scan has 3 codes, 2 of which are U0404, P0700. Trans shifts smoothly, gear shifter works smoothly, nothing abnormal on dashboard displays relating to these items. Is it possible for an electrical problem and not really any shifter problem?

Re: Check Engine Lite

What was the third code?

The P0700 is just a generic code saying the transmission has a stored error code.

The U0404 is indicating a fault with the gear shift mechanism.

If you search the forum, you will see quite a few people have had problems with this part, and some have had success with cleaning the transmission gear selector.

It is unlikely that the error codes you are experiencing are a result of an electrical problem unrelated to the transmission.

You could leave it and see if it gets to the point where it goes into limp home mode and deal with it then.
