Clean egr valve

Has anyone ever tried to clean the EGR Valve on a 2005 4.7L grand cherokee? Can this be done?

Also, I have been reading that the pvc valve & egr are some how connected. I did an oil change the other day & did the test for the pvc valve where you shake it and if it still rattles, it does not need to be changed.
