Common Issues ?'s

I have narrowed things down on what I want to a 2009-2010 Overland or Limited 5.7 4X4.

I am unsure if the Quadra Drive II or Quadra Trac II is what I want. Most use will be pavement, some snow, minimal actual off-road. Any advantages/disadvantages to one or the other?

Do the year/engine/trans combos for the years I listed have any "known and expected" gremlins? For example, I had a 2001 Trans Am 6-speed manual...we all knew the rear-end was going to die...and it did. That sort of thing. Ticking time-bomb save up for it it's gonna die at XX/XXXXXX miles! Like a Ford Taurus transmission from the early 2000's.

Re: Common Issues ?'s

the hemi has a very crappy pcv system, you will want a oil catch can and clean up the throttle body

Is this mandatory? My LS1 also oil-soaked the intake, but I never worried about it. LS1's are tuned rich, so it was never an issue with running lean due to oil contamination and it soldiered on for 150K miles. Also, I see these 5.7's require plug changes every 30K miles. Should keep any real build-up out of the equation?

well I have seen people dumping a catch can in as little as 800 miles, typically its about a half a can between oil changes from what ive seen from others here on the garage. it should run better with one on and have better or should I say smoother idle quality and power delivery. every 5.7 owner here will tell you to get a can

cant go wrong with a billet technology can or one from bwoody and even Arrington performance. these 3 are the most common on here. some of the older 05-07 tend to stall, haven't heard too much with 08-10's doing it, but I wont rule it out. theres a few threads on the stalling with the hemi and I believe there are solutions in there too.

Re: Common Issues ?'s

I have a 2010 GCL with the Hemi. I installed the Moroso catch can designed for the Hemi. What I like about it is the drain valve under the device. I could'nt see unscrewing the bottom of the others to drain it without making a mess or getting it back together in such tight quarters. I think it may cost a little more but it is worth it.

Re: Common Issues ?'s

Catch cans are not mandatory but, as Jeff said, most of us with Hemi's highly recommend them. As far as continuing to run without, here's what Mike at Diablosport (tuner makers) said on another Jeep forum about the "wonderful" PCV system on the Hemi's and the adverse affects it causes.

"No, this is where I comment on lost power due to oil contamination in the intake tract/combustion chamber. I will assure you that after having seen as many logs of as many HEMIs as we have here at DiabloSport, not to mention the numerous HEMI vehicles we have had on our dyno for R&D, I can say, without a doubt, that the HEMI's PCV/Oil Vapor control is the worst of anything we deal with. All you have to do is pull your intake manifold to see the puddles of oil collected in there, and realize that it eventually gets in the combustion chamber, and oil don't like to burn, thus, detonation occurs.

There is no gimmick here. HEMI's have KR issues. The KR issues are 99% of the time contributed to by oil contamination in the intake charge, reducing the effective octane in the combustion chamber, and leading to a loss of performance.

Plenty of people have seen solid power gains on even stock vehicles when getting rid of an oil issue by adding a catch can that works properly."

Also, again as Jeff said, many times, especially in the winter, you'll have to empty the can in less than 800-1000 miles. Lots of condensation and oil mixed.....we call it mayonaise forms and is passed through the system. On my Hemi WK I've even added a second in-line PCV Valve, to no avail. It's only slowed it down a little

As far as what kind to get, it's totally your choice. You can even make one out of a tin can if you want, but the better quality ones are definitely worth the $$$, IMO. Personally, I run BT Tech. ones on both my Hemi vehicles.

Also, I am pretty sure all you'll find on the 5.7 Limitied and Overlands is the QDII transfer case. For sure that's all the comes in the Overlands....not positive about the Limiteds though.

Re: Common Issues ?'s

I spoke with my contact at the dealership today. They have NO vehicles that fit my above criteria. None. In all of Group 1 Auto (something like 150 dealerships). I am hoping what I am looking for is not going to turn out to be THIS hard to find.

As to the catch-can, my LS1 was the same way. It used 1qt every 2000 miles or so until I did something about it, but noone I know ever lost any power from it on the dyno or at the track. Is the Hemi just a more sensitive motor?
