Continuous hot/cold air from floor vents

i am a fairly new owner of a Grand Cherokee Overland 2009 with dual automatic a/c. i noticed something weird is going on when the a/c unit is completely off. So, when the system is off (no heating, AC or blower) and the vehicle is at speed I feel hot or cold air coming in from the floor (only) air outlets (both driver and passenger side). When the vehicle is at low speed/idle feel much less air, but i can still say that outside air is entering the cabin because you can smell the outside odors(fumes from nearby trucks). Not to mention the extrnal air temperature (if it's -5 degs outside then you legs are getting really cold). When AC is ON air direction towards panel/floor/defrost works perfectly - i.e if you direct the air to panel outlets no air is coming out from floor outlets and so on........ Is this normal ???? from experience in my previous cars with all modes OFF, all air inlets and outlets (front and rear panel, floor, defrost) are shut to prevent the cabin from external cold/hot air as well as dust and odors. Is this a recirc problem or it's normal ??? Pls assist 'cause getting really frustrated with the car...

Re: continuous hot/cold air from floor air outlets

Sounds to me like a previous one I've heard. Maybe the ATC control heads calibration is off and it is not reading to close the doors fulling when off. so try disconnecting the battery and re connecting. if not then some is wrong with the actuators on the hvac doors is gone.

Re: continuous hot/cold air from floor air outlets

Thanks...... I assume that the actuator doors are those located in the box behind the glove comp ??? or it's somewhere deeper and a dashboard removal is inevitable ??

Re: Continuous hot/cold air from floor vents

did u say that you were able to control the temp of the "leaking" air? most cars since the 70s have some sort of airflow thru the cabin to prevent air stagnation and it also aids in preventing window fogging. Although i have no idea if its normal or not in the jeep, since i never have any vehicle i have owned with the system in the off position always have the vent on for circulation
after more thought im going to say its normal, as there is really no off position for the heater controls, only the fan. and im not sure you can activate the recirculate feature without the fan operating, another reason that makes sense to me is that with constant positive pressure within the cabin you are less likely to have exhaust fumes from youre vehicle entering the cabin.

Re: Continuous hot/cold air from floor vents

i will have to double check on that but i think yes, i am able to control the temperature of the leaking air with the HVAC off and by only turning the temperature knobs. I am puzzled to tell you the truth. As i said previously the air 'leak' is getting worst (more and more air coming in from floor vents) when you increase your speed. Recirc is not working when blwoer is off, ........need to have at least the blower working to activate the recirculation. With only the blower working, if i push the recirculation, the a/c (snowflake) button activates immediately and i have to push the a/c button again to deactivate since i want to use teh blower for hot air only..

Just a though, since you have a similar model could you make an effort to put your hand towards the floor vents (either driver or pass side), with all modes OFF and to check for incoming air from floor vents when driving at speed? If you drive in excess of 50-60 miles it will be very easy to notice.......If you do that please report back to me.....thanks

Re: Continuous hot/cold air from floor vents

Kennzz05, i've progressed a bit more and found out that my recirc actuator gear is broken so the recirculation door stays open. Have removed the glovebox, removed the 3 torx screws from the actuator. The upper part of the gear is missing and i cannot find the broken part, so cannot fix it........

Re: Continuous hot/cold air from floor vents

If there is a local scrap yard that will let you pick your own parts, see if they will let you just grab the gear that is needed off a wrecked wk. Even if they don't I am sure you'll get the entire assembly for considerably cheaper than a dealership will charge you.
