Coolant Leak - Can't Find Source!

Cross-posting this from my build thread. When I returned home from a quick errand today, I realized that my WK decided to throw up....all over my drive way.

After a long while of playing 'spot the leak'...I'm a little baffled. Has any one else had this happen, and where the heck is it coming from? It seems to be on the driver's side, far right side of the radiator (or in that general vicinity)

I'm hoping it's just a hose and that my radiator didn't decide to take a dump today. I snapped a few pics (and a quick video) showing where it's at, in case anyone can shed some light on this?

The view looking in from the engine bay. I have already fondled the large hose connecting to the radiator and that hose is fine, no moisture, cuts, damage, etc.

The view when I crept in under the bumper.

The view looking up past the part with the black/green wires.

Where the heck is it leaking from? I'll post the video as well once it finishes uploading. I'm hoping it's just a hose or something simple that can be fixed 'DIY'.

Here's the link to the video.

Re: Coolant Leak - Can't Find Source!

Start it up first and find out where it's coming from. That's what I did when I found out that my Waterpump went bad.

And you don't want coolant leaking as some dog or other animal might lick it so put something underneath. (I love animals don't judge!)

Also whoever put that coolant in your Jeep before used the wrong coolant. It's suppose to pink orangish/pinkish coolant called Zerex G05.

I ran it for a while, still couldn't pin point it. I'll run it some more and see if I can find it. I just don't want to risk further damage. Hmm..

As for the puddle, that happened in the brief 10 minutes that I went upstairs and I had no clue about it (I was shocked and pissed, as I came downstairs for a HID install and ended up seeing this massive leak) but I'm armed with rags and towels to ensure it stays off the ground. I'm a pet owner myself, along with a pre-veterinary student, so I know all about what coolant does to animals. :P Thankfully it's a gated apartment driveway and I am the only dog owner in the complex, so that alone will restrict the access to it.

Most likely the shady dealer I bought it from just plopped that stuff in there. They did a LOT of things wrong on this car, honestly. :P So I'm not surprised that the coolant isn't up to spec either.

Re: Coolant Leak - Can't Find Source!

How long ago did you buy it? Did they give you any warranty that you could be under right now?

I can't pin-point it. Just be easy on it and hopefully you find out soon what the problem it.

Goodluck and let us know!

I bought it 3 months ago from a shady 'we finance anything with a pulse' dealer. They gave me a crappy 30 day or 1,000 mile warranty for drivetrain only, and given that I average 2,000 miles per month, that was voided real fast. :/

I idled it for about 5-10 min right now just to see if I could find the leak..no luck as nothing was really oozing, but my engine temp gauge went from cold to the half-way mark pretty quickly. Now I wonder if it's even safe to drive it to a shop. :/

Re: Coolant Leak - Can't Find Source!

Its either your radiator cap (hard to believe I know) or your water pump is taking a dump. A sign of the water pump going out is that its 'peeing'. I had a mystery leak FOREVER and had to add collant at every gas fill. Then at the mechanic he said the radiator cap took a dump and replaced it. Problem gone.

Re: Coolant Leak - Can't Find Source!

I'll bet it was the water pump. Had to replace mine not too long ago when I was experiencing similar symptoms. Granted, it never took a dump like that, but it was leaking nonetheless. On the 5.7L, the water pump weep hole location is impossible to see, so I'd just get it over with and reinstall a new one. Took me and a buddy a couple hours/beers and maybe 125 bones at the local stealer.

Re: Coolant Leak - Can't Find Source!

the best way to troubleshoot a coolant leak is to pressure test it

there is a tool you can rent from auto zone or you could buy one if you feel the need. on one end it has a radiator cap with a connector on it i will come with multiple cap sizes to fit multiple cars. then a hose will go to a gauge and a hand pump. at running temp a cooling system should be pressurized at 16psi if you pump it up to 16 psi hot or cold you will find out where it is leaking from and the good thing is if you do it when its cold you can release the pressure right away and get to work on the problem right away. instead of having to wait till it cools down to work on it.
