Cruise Control takes off WOT

Just rescued my 2006 WK 3.7L from the dealer. The cruise control accelerated wide open and scared my wife, then quit working. Dealer tech said he replaced a high resistance wire that feeds the cruise circuit. Then they called and said I need a new PCM ($700). The communication stopped when I suggested a factory Reman PCM ($500). I lost confidence and picked up the car($400). Driving it home the cruise lit up upon turning it on and my hopes soared that it would somehow work. When I set the cruise at 45mph it went wide open again. Now it's on me to fix. Can't seem to locate a reliable trouble shoot or wire schematic. Can anyone help?

Re: Cruise Control takes off WOT

First did you check for any fault code set by the PCM?If no faults are set, them the problem can be with the PCM, but also with the speed control servo. I would clean the connectors on the PCM and on the speed control servo, to rule out any moisture or pin corrosion problem.
In attachment how the speed control servo looks like.

Re: Cruise Control takes off WOT

No scanner available till Monday. I don't think you can check codes with key cycle on the OBD2. I will check for connection problems on the PCM/servo this weekend. Thanks so much for your input. I wondered about the likelihood of a servo fail instead of the PCM. Will update troubleshoot as I progress.

Re: Cruise Control takes off WOT

I would expect a servo solenoid failure to be setting a fault code in the PCM. Not familiar with the WK myself, but on the WJ we can see the faults doing the key dance.

Wj's Cruise is Also Vacuum controlled also.

Not sure how the WK's are if they have an electric throttle body

3.7 and 4.7 still have the vacuum controlled servo system, while the 5.7 is servo less. This should be for 05-08 models, not sure after that.

Re: Cruise Control takes off WOT

Just wanted to let everyone know, and especially the guys who posted helpful comments, that I now have a working cruise control.
Researched buying a reman PCM and after checking the companies that offer plug and play fixes with the BBB decided a $100 used computer from an honest salvage yard (Auto Parts Recycler) was the best option at this point. Actually found one within 15 miles of my location. Pulled in to my favorite independent garage and in about 15 min. had the PCM bolted in and flashed. Worked as it should and I'm really happy after all the hassle and money I wasted at the dealer. By the way I was able to barter for the flash fee.
Thanks to the guy who posted a video on YouTube on changing the solder-in light bulbs for the HVAC dash module. Less than an hour and $10 for a 10 pack of the bulbs that included shipping (ebay) and I can see the controls at night.
Now I need to change a tail light bulb that just expired.
