Re: did my first transmission pan Drop today..Gooo Me!! Now Im confused.

Thanx man, Mines is up to 7 quarts now, I can't really take it out for a 30 mile drive, I need to conserve gas till I get paid next week, but a quart low or hopefully it's just almost right, should make much of a difference do you think? At least till I get it checked out next week. Overfishing scares me, I think last time I overfilled and caused a tranny leak, least of problems from over filling but it's annoying. I was looking into either hand pumps or mighty vac for just in case emergencies.

Re: did my first transmission pan Drop today..Gooo Me!! Now Im confused.

I believe all 05> 4.7's and 5.7's have the 545RFE tranny. 3.7's and 6.1's have the Mercedes NAG1 tranny, which by the way, is much better, IMO. I have one in my 5.7 Helmi LX, and it is far superior, in all regards, to the 545RFE.

I went through the same thing you did......adding a little at a time until I got it right. At 7 qts., where is it on the dipstick now?

the 545 is a different animal when tuned. Theres no control with the NAG aside from the ability to take out torque management. The worst part of the 545RFE is the deep 3rd gear, takes BIG power to not get bogged down.

Re: did my first transmission pan Drop today..Gooo Me!! Now Im confused.

Hey Ryan, can you make the 06 545RFE a full autostick like the NAG1? I mean it doesn't upshift (no matter what) till the lever is moved, has all 5 gear positions, and when it starts out in 1st it doesn't upshift until lever is moved to 2, 3, 4, etc. On my NAG1, it doesn't need a thing. The WOT shifts will take your head off, and if you can make the 545 like that, you're on, buddy. One of my biggest gripes with the 545, aside from those above, are the WOT downshifts, especially form 4 or 5 back to 2nd or 3rd. Seems like the TCM is shocked at what you expect it to do and has to think about whether it's going to allow it or not. Then it goes back one gear at a time, and not directly from 4 or 5 to 2 or 3. It seems to always take a second in the gear(s) in between. I guess overall it just seems sluggish and unresponsive, barely acceptable, IMO.

Check your PMs.

We dont just take out a few sections of TM and call it good. We totally revamp the upshift/downshift schedule, line psi, etc.

Almost 8 qts for me. I repeatedly checked mine a couple times a day for a few days to get the proper fill level.

Kool, thanx..I was talking to Jeepgcoman about something weird I found on the dipstick about a couple of days later. It was tiny specks in the tranny fluid after I pulled out the dipstick, no matter how many times I reinserted it and took it back out.there were Not many and tiny almost microscopic, you have to be focused on it to noticed but it's there. I got nervous and thought it was parts of the transmission and thought how could it be I just chchanged the fluid its still fresh and doesn't smell burnt. He advised me to put some tranny fluid on white paper to see what was left behind.

After the fluid soaked, what was left behind were some black specks. I I smudged it on the paper and between my fingers and it wasn't gritty and smeared easily, like solid oil based. I also noticed that the paper which I wiped with the dipstick had a black line smeared along with the Atf fluid.

What I concluded was that it might have been from the mopar atf Rtv that might have made its way into the system or since I removed the filters and replaced with new ones that it might have loosened up debris or it could have been the valvoline atf+4 synthetic that I have put in there for the first time that's cleaning up the system by loosening stuff up. I also made sure I didn't make a sloppy mess with the Rtv before putting the pan back. Either way the black specks are not gritty or hard to the touch. I've had the Jeep close to a year and I never saw anything in the fluid I just changed or at least something I've noticed. No debris in the pan and last fluid looked healthy. all in all it shifts fine and I was curious to know if anyone had this happen to them.
