I have a 2007 grand cherokee, turn the key and it will not start.everything else comes on,but will not engage starter. When I turn the key there is a quick flash on dash that reads transmission over temp.
yeah, most likely the starter. they are known for going out like that. no warning whatsoever. mine did it last year. cost about $200 for dealer to replace.
Had the same thing happen to me 2 years ago, complete with transmission overtemp message. It wasn't the starter in my case. The dealer just polished some contacts under warranty. I wish I had asked more questions about the location of the contacts at the time. I blame it on having forded some deep water at higher than recommended speed a month or so earlier. The starter still works fine today.
I feel your pain. I get free CAA towing up to 160 km. Mine was flatbedded 158km from my cottage to the dealer at home. I pay extra for the "gold" plan but hoped never to have to use it.
As for the starter, I would recommend at least troubleshooting it before swapping it. Make sure the juice is actually reaching the solenoid. With all these modules and relays, it's not as simple as it used to be.
^ true story - used to be where it was either fuel/ignition issue which could've only been one of few things so those were easy to TS. Troubleshooting cars before OBD were introduced wasn't too complex, any old regular handy man could do it in reality
Now you have to be an electrician and certified mechanic just to know what to check and plug in and the how to use it properly, the computers and modules and all the variations per manufacturers are making it nearly impossible to trouble shoot these things anymore to the point its easier to just drop at the dealer and pay the man . Dont get me wrong though, I do like OBD and having a comp tell me specifically what issues are arising when they do, it has also opened a whole new door for problems, so its good and bad like anything.
Obviously maintenance/fluids type stuff is still standard/easy (Although some models call for OEM fluids only now since they're so "special" you cant change em yourself )but when its an electrical/engine issue, forget about it. Seen my whole dash light up and gauges go haywire while driving for a few seconds, had the trans downshift erratically randomly on me, engine surges on highway, you name it. Luckily it hasn't repeated itself so Im pretty thankful and appreciative of the Jeep overall, shes been good to me for the most part
