Dreaded "Service 4WD System" Message

Starter went out last month...and now this is happening. Was just driving 65 on the highway and the message popped up. Drivability is the same, haven't noticed anything different. Just rolled over 76k miles.

My question is, what cna I expect from the dealer? Or what will trigger this message? I'm hoping it's something fairly cheap since the starter set me back a couple hundred last month..

Any input helps

If your final drive control module has not been updated and the code is stored your repair process will likely begin with a flash of the FDCM as there is a flash for the FDCM that doesnt specify applicable dtc's it simply states "if the code is stored". From there it could be the transfercase, the FDCM itself, wiring, your 4lo switch....

I had the same stuff-flashing FCDM did it for me. I still don't agree with having to pay for a re-flash, if it's defined in a TSB....

There are tons of reasons it could come on, so having it scanned is the best way to pinpoint the cause and troubleshoot.

When it comes to things like this (or other things that require the dealer to scan), I wait until I am going there for something else like an oil change, and then I ask them if they can just scan it real quick since it is already in the bay and the tech is already there. I have never had to pay for them to scan and look something up..

On my 06 XK, it came on, and since I do not use 4x4 in Florida, it didn't concern me at all. It stayed on for quite a while before I took it in. It had a code stored for clutch wear, but they looked fine. I had the code cleared and it has never come back on.

Some people have the message come on, and can still engage 4Lo but some can not. I had one of the cases where 4Lo would not engage with the message on. I am not sure if it still had full time 4WD, since I never take the XK in a situation when it would be needed. I just know I tried to engage 4Lo and it would not.
