Drive to 4th gear

I know that the shifter allows you to change gears by moving it to the right and left while in (D) Drive, but it seems to go into 1st gear only instead of 4th first. I have not tried this while driving up to speed yet as I am afraid it will slam into 1st gear while driving. Am I doing something wrong? I can't imagine Jeep would design the gear selector to only go into 1st while in Drive going 70 mph on the highway. So my question is, how do I shift into 4th gear first while in (D)Drive?

Re: Drive to 4th gear

If you tap it to the left it will go down one gear, if you hold it to the left it will select the lowest possible gear for the raod speed without over-revving the engine.

+1.

Also, the system is designed to let you select the maximum gear available. Since you are testing it from a stop, there is one gear to chose - 1st. Go ahead and try it once you are on the highway and the tranny is in top gear. It will only kick down 1 gear and put you in 4th.
I promise you won't go into 1st at 70 MPH.

Re: Drive to 4th gear

I was hoping that would be the case. I guess I need to play around with it. I trust that it will not go into 1st while on the highway....that feature I like. Thanks!

Re: Drive to 4th gear

This is well described in the paper owner's manual in your glove box. You don't even have to pop in the DVD to learn about it.

Note that holding the lever to the left will put it in the lowest gear it can go into without over-revving the engine. In my pea-brain, I took that to mean it would downshift such that it would use engine braking to maintain, say, 40mph going down a hill. Nope! If you hold it to the left when you're going 40, it's going to put it in 1st gear and it will feel like you slammed on the brakes. I've since gotten used to tapping to the left to get the gear I want for engine braking.

Re: Drive to 4th gear

Wow this thread just bought back some memories.

I was driving my mom's 08 WK 3.7L on the highway at about 75mph. My friend knocked the shifter and put it in manual shift mode. I wanted to put it back in normal drive mode and I thought the proper way to do this was to put it in neutral then back in drive.

WRONG

Rather than going into the proper gear when I put it back into drive from neutral it shifted into 1st The tach instantly pegged all the way to the right and it felt like I slammed on the brakes. The engine basically exploded under the stress. Needless to say I had to have it towed.

It ended up being that when the engine overspeeded the rocker arm let loose and whacked the valve cover. The cam lobe was pretty much a mess too and the casting was cracked where the push rod / lifter was.

It was all covered under warranty. Apparently it was a known software bug.

Long story short never go manual-N-D. Actually it's probably fine to do on the new wk2s since I'm sure they fixed the issue but I'm not going to try it. The Jeep has been perfectly fine since they fixed it. My friend is no longer allowed to sit in the front seat.

Re: Drive to 4th gear

I was able to try this out yesterday and it worked as I hoped. Had the Jeep on the highway going 70MPH, moved the shifter once to the left and it dropped into 4th gear. Came in handy as I was climbing a steep hill yesterday, even dropped it into 3rd for more pull, then held it back to the right into drive. Works great! Loving this Jeep more every day. Can't wait for the snow to fall!
