Driveline Clunking Noise

Hey all, so I took my 05 WK 5.7 to the local shop to have em look at a axle seal leak and what I thought was worn diff bushings. My symptoms are clunks when I change gears (P-D, D-P, ect) or when I let off the accelerator suddenly, usually to coast, it clunks too and I can feel movement underneath me. Now the mechanic said they checked everything included in the drivetrain and said nothing is worn or loose, mounts are ok, and the bushings look fine. So now Im confused as to what the cause can be. Could there be another reason or should I get a second opinion from another shop.

Re: Driveline Clunking Noise

99% of the time that is the front axle pinion mount bushing that is worn and torn, letting the front axle slam up and down

Re: Driveline Clunking Noise

Thanks for the reply, is that something one could do in their driveway or is it pretty intricate?

Re: Driveline Clunking Noise

I think it would be rough in the driveway at work up on a lift with an air hammer its about a 20min job though, you have to unbolt the front driveshaft and unbolt the front axle mounts and swing the front axle upside-down to gain access to the mount, I then use a air hammer to remove and install the new bushing.

Re: Driveline Clunking Noise

I see, well I don't have air tools so sounds like it'd be a PITA for me lol. Ill have to borrow a compressor. Is it a part that I can procrastinate on or is total failure of it pretty bad?

Re: Driveline Clunking Noise

Nope it wont "hurt" the jeep if you keep driving it just will be kinda annoying with the loud clunky noise, the bushing can't really fail anymore than it probably is, you definitely don't have to worry about the front axle falling out or something.

Re: Driveline Clunking Noise

Ok, that was my main concern, being my luck the diff would fall out onto the highway. Glad I dont have to rush to fix it, I appreciate the help!

Driveline Clunking Noise

While there is no major rush to repair it, it can contribute to driveshaft wear and fatigue on the other two bushings, so try not to put it off too long.
