its over heating and i dont know a ton about it. but the 3.7 dont have a fan clutch right? its just a electric fan i think well if so can the fan ware out over time and start to slow down and not push as much air. it only will kick on once the temp get to die center then it goes back down at stop lights but while im driving its fine. I just want to know if its normal for the 3.7 to fluctuate so much? or if its somthing broken.
-thanks Gabe
but even if i just sit for a while it will go stright up then the fan kicks up and cools it down i dont have to give it gas or any thing. when it does get hot like that it tends to idle really bad to and starts to shake. any idea
hot as in dead center. coolant it brand new and was flushed out last month. for the thermostat i have no idea. but if it was bad it would just overheat even when i was driving right? the heater is always HOT moving or stopped.
Had this same problem, it ended up being air in the coolant system, my radiator cap "vapor locked." Three or four times in a row I would wait till about an hour after i got home then i would open the radiator cap, i would hear a rush of air and watch coolant drain from the reservoir through the relief hose into radiator. Id fill the reservoir and do it all over again, would only work after i ran it at operating temp for awhile. The hose from the radiator cap area to the bottom of the coolant reservoir might have been a little clogged too. I think it happened because i used regular antifreeze instead of topping it off with the orange mopar stuff from dealership, sounds crazy weird i know but thats what happened. Flushed it and used only mopar coolant, no more weird air problems. Still had to burp it but has not reoccured since.
ya maybe i have air in the cooling system. im using mopar coolant right now thats what i thought the problem but it still doing it but i will check if it is air. thanks
if i have air in the system would it get HOT and then cool back down just when the fan kicks on? or would it be just over heating and then stay over heated?
Mine would overheat with fan going and everything. Only when i was going over 45 mph would it cool down close to operating temp. Even then sometimes would still overheat. Go out and take off your radiator cap, look down in it and if its not full and you see coolant flowing from resevoir hose, might just be a trickle, wait for it to fill your radiator to brim, squeezing hose to resevoir might help, put cap back on, fill resevoir, should only take at most a few times. Hope this helps.
well i tryed all of that and nothing it fixing it. i can let it run and it will just go up and down with the temp but will not pass top dead center right when it gets to the top the fan kicks in and it go back down. when i drive to work its fine as long at im moving. if im just driving around town is when it will go up and down? could it be my radiator? like dirt in it?
When did it start to do this? Before or after work was done to it? did the bleeder screw get pulled out of the front cover water neck?
There are multiple ways a thermostat can fail, but realistically it would be important to see if the temperature is actually going up and down an abnormal, there will naturally be a 10-15 degree swing with thermostat operation.
With your fan turning on and the temp going down I would lean away from the fan as the culprit. If it has the power to play catchup its got more than enough power to keep it where it needs to be. you may just have a temp sensor issue or a gauge issue. But you would really need see what the temperature is actually doing with a temp gun or at very least monitor the temp with a scanner.
It started befor work was done and yes the bleeder screw was pulled. i will just have to try the temp gun. to see whats its doing. thanks for the input.
the jeep is going to run in the 195-205 +/- there is no spec for where your going to pull the temperature, but your likely not going to even pull operating temperature. as close to the coolant temp sensor as possible which is located just infront of the middle of the intake manifold IN the block. The sensor is what can be assumed to be sending a the temperature signal that your seeing on the gauge so reading as close to the sensor as possible is better.
I'm trying to understand why you think the Jeep is overheating. From my understanding you are saying the temperature needle gets to the 12'o clock position and then the fan kicks in and cools down the engine. Dead center is roughly 210 degrees F and somewhere around there the cooling fan will turn on. Someone who knows the true computer operation of the Jeep can correct me if im wrong but the cooling fans will run until the temperature returns back down to around 190 or 195F? The cooling fan will cycle its operation andwill not run constantly unless the ac is on.
Now if your jeep is getting hot to like say the '3/4' mark to the 'H' side, then i would say it is overheating. I think you are questioning if the fluctuation in temperature is normal... Dont get me wrong but what you are describing is what my Jeep does and I have the V8 with clutch fan. It happens to me when its warm out and im in stop and go traffic.
What is not normal from what you said, is that your Jeep idles really bad and starts to shake.
so i tested it with the temp gun and im in good shape its not over heating i guess its just normal for it to move with the fan kicking on and the thermostat opening and closing . the only thing i dont under stand it the idle?
