Electrical issues in cold

I have been experiencing issues with the gauges flashing while driving my 2006 Grand Cherokee Overland. This problem seems to happen only when the car has been out in the cold. It starts after about 10 minutes after starting the car. I assumed that something was getting iced over and then when the ice melted it was causing a short. I did find that I can correct the problem by stopping, shutting off the car and restarting it.

Now my problem has gotten worse. When the car has been out overnight in 20 degree temperatures, the engine will not start. All of the gauges work. It takes about 5 minutes and it finally starts. It sounds like a relay is clicking.

I read other forums and it was suggested that the first problem is probably an issue with the gauge cluster.

If this is a gauge cluster issue, or something else, how do I find the issue and correct it? I am mechanically inclined, but I have not done much work on cars since they were easy to work on (60's and 70's models).

Re: Electrical issues in cold

Well, I replaced the battery to fix the electrical issue. I replaced the starter to fix the starting problem. The electronic problem still happens in the cold.

Anybody have any suggestions on finding the electrical problem where the dash lights start flashing while driving when the temp is below freezing? It waits until about 10 minutes after starting and seems to be corrected by shutting off the ignition and restarting it.

Re: Electrical issues in cold

Try replacing the ignition switch. I had the same issue and it got worse when it was cold (though still above freezing). I started by cleaning the junction blocks under the dash on driver side. That helped but the ignition switch seems to have been the culprit for me.
