Engine failure, what to do....

Hello all, I've always like browsing these forums, and posted some pics awhile back.

06 GC 5.7 Limited (93K miles) wouldn't start yesterday after my wife ran into the shoe store.

Assumed it was the fuel pump since it would turn over, just not start up....not even stumble.

Had it towed to the dealer as I didn't have time to deal with it. Turns out it was 5 quarts low on oil and the engine is completely destroyed.....I'm in shock.

The vehicle ran fine up to that point, and while it needed an oil change (appx 3800 miles since last one) I just checked it a week ago, when I noticed the coolant was low (could be a related problem).

Anyway, now I don't know what to do. I just installed all new Bilstien suspension (1000 miles ago) and it has new(er) brakes.

Fully loaded great shape. I owe a bit on it, but it's almost paid off.

What is it worth in it's current state? What would you guys do? New engine, installed will be between $4800 and $5800, I will probably take it ot an independant, not the dealership.

How do guys do parting these out?

Thanks for any input.

5800 is a smoking deal if its a mopar longblock, iirc your looking at that or more on the motor itself... The last engine I did was a 4.7l and it was almost 10k dollars.

Re: Engine failure, what to do....

Any MOPAR longlbock or reman assembly comes with the 3yr 100k warranty so thats good, 2 if you call LKQ corporation, they can sell you an engine with 1yr parts and labor and still be out of it fairly cheap.....

I would go used and see if you can get the dealer to install it. Trust me, have them do it, its defiantly worth it...

5 quarts low? What happened? Have you looked into getting a second opinion on repair vs replacement? You never know, someone could be trying to screw you over.

Re: Engine failure, what to do....

The $5800 was using a motor from LKQ. I thought it was a decent price too.

The whole thing seems odd though. The oil low, when I recently checked it. The no warning light on low oil, the no odd sounds usually accompanied by a catastrophic engine failure. After talking to a few people, I'm leaning towards a snapped timing chain, but definitely getting a second opionion. Have to rent a trailer to take it to a different shop.

Have you guys ever heard of the valve seals pushing out on these heads? I talked to one guy (salvage yard owner, friend of mechanic friend). He said the 5.7's are time bombs and he rarely sees used ones because they all blow up form the previous symptoms. Now I've never heard this, and I'm pretty sure it's crap, becasue this 5.7 is in just about every vehicle chrysler makes.

So, this morning I'm headed to the dealership to see what the deal is.

On a related note, I called to see what they would give me on trade. They wouldn't even give me a number until i was certain I wanted to buy a new car. WTF.

Re: Engine failure, what to do....

I would really do as suggested and get a 2nd opinion, it may cost you a few hundred to get it checked out at another dealer, or independant shop, but it could save you thousands.

As for them not even offering you a price on trade before you picked out a new car, find a new dealership. They should've seen that as an opportunity to give you a half decent number to get the ball rolling on a new car.

Just because the engine wasnt low on oil before doesnt mean u didnt break something and burn through a few quarts or leak them out on the way to the store. Engine with no oil runs for about half a second before shit hits the fan

Re: Engine failure, what to do....

OK, update, just got back from the dealer.

He (service manager) said no bits of metal came out with the last bit of oil drained out. They then refilled the oil and started it. Then there was horrible noise coming from the bottom end. He demonstrated this for me. It actually stayed running at a low idle making this horrible noise.

So, that eliminates snapped chain, and fuel pump. But really has me wondering, since it wouldn't even start, nor was it making the horrible noise prior to them having it. I do understand that many noises will not occur, just under cranking.

In any case, A second opinion will be had. I am not sure what I'm going to do yet. Still mostly bummed.

I told the service manager of the horrible experience I had. He said 'You were talking to Brandon, right?' I told him I was talking to Brandon through another salesman, he explained Brandon was a retard and he is putting together the numbers to give to another salesman who will call me. Pretty sure I wont go that route, but it will be nice to know.

I appreciate all the feedback and thoughts so far on this. Thank you.

WTF.
This is news to me. From what I have seen, these are very reliable motors even beyond 200,000 miles. I wouldn't be surprised if my whole jeep fell apart around me, but the motor kept on going.

I would venture a guess that the reason that there aren't a whole lot of used 5.7's around is they are still in the vehicles they were sold with! Those that do get parted out are probably in high demand because of how good of a motor it is, not because they all blow up.

Like you say, I am sure at this stage these boards would be full of posts of blown engines if it was a real problem and we all would have heard about it.

Re: Engine failure, what to do....

It's funny, this is my third GC and 4th Jeep. The first 2000 GC with the 4.7 had all sorts of electrical probs. Then I had an 02 with a 4.7HO, that one dropped a valve at 85K and toasted the motor, and now this.

Bad luck with Jeeps? Haha.
