Front differential drop to remove CV Axle

All,

I have a failed CV axle on the driver side that I am trying to solve.

I have just installed all new ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings, and rocky road upper control arms but cannot for the life of me get the CV axle out of the front differential.

I spent hours and hours on it today and have decided I need to remove the front differential entirely to get at that damn pin/retaining ring.

Does anyone have any images or know how difficult it is to access this pin from the diff cover?

Am I opening up another can of worms?

Dropping the differential doesn't look so terrible but I don't know how hard that ring is to access from the inside of the unit if at all.

Any images or descriptions would be greatly helpful.

Many thanks,
Dustin

Keep trying. I had a HELL of a time getting mine out but it's possible. I have had to do mine 4 times. I tried to pull it off with a strap and my other jeep once but it broke the strap. Finally got it out by hand with a sledge hammer and a long pipe. Try sticking a pry bar in the top and put pressure on it and hit the bottom with a sledge. You can cut up the boot and pull the shaft out so it doesn't put pressure on the snap ring. Not possible to remove the diff without pulling the cv's first, not enough space in the housing.

Re: Front differential drop to remove CV Axle

Thanks for the encouragement but while I was inspecting the differential carrier I noticed the bushings were showing their age (140k miles) and so I decided to replace all three while the Jeep is out of service and I have a second car available.

Note to anyone doing this: do not even think about using a crowbar to remove your axle. Autozone rents a slide hammer and a tool called the FWD axle puller that is literally made for this task. I am flabbergasted that this has not been mentioned in the half dozen threads about stuck CV shafts.

Crowbars not only damaged my axle seals they did not get the axle out. 5 solid whacks on the slide hammer and axle flew across the garage where I then gave it a traditional Viking burial.

I used the bungie trick to hold the cup in the differential to give it a head start and am not sure if this was helpful or not but who cares.

I spent hours on this thing in the car and am certain this tool would have solved the problem.

This is for anyone searching in the future:

Never again!

I am just updating this in case anyone else happens upon it.

Cool dude that's great! Btw you MUST replace the seals every time you pull the axle so it's not really a big deal if the prybar damages them, can't really damage anything else.

Oh sweet well then I'm glad I damaged it otherwise I wouldn't have known to replace them. Learned quite a bit on this run of work.

Also if anyone reads this and is doing their differential bushings follow the advice that I read:

Cut the ring with a sawzall and then use an air chisel around the lip followed by the center of the bushing to beat them out.

I had both out in less than 5 minutes.

Thanks!
