Front differential leak???

I changed my oil today on my 05 GC WK and after removing the skid plate I noticed a coating of differential fluid on the rear of the oil pan, skid plate and the 5 inch square plate with a 3 inch hole in the middle on the drivers side of the oil pan. It appears to be coming from the drivers side of the differential. Anyone else dealt with a leak in this area?

Re: Front differential leak???

Are you sure it's diff fluid and its not a leaking p/s rack?

If you're sure it's the diff, I'd start with the obvious and check to make sure the drain and fill plugs are nice and tight.

Re: Front differential leak???

Just checked n its not PS fluid. It looks like the axle seals are shot.

Re: Front differential leak???

Mine leaked. It was easy fix. Some of the bolts had loosened. Tightened them up and leak stopped.

Differential cover bolts were loose a couple of places on the bottom half.

Re: Front differential leak???

Axle seals are tough on this especially on the drivers side, the last diff I overhauled I could not get the driver axle out at all, it took cutting the boot and dismantling the axle to remove weight and using a chisle between the diff pin and the axle with the cover off. I spent 3 hours between trying in the car and trying without tearing the axle apart. Not fun. I have never had that happen before but a coworker said he did pretty regularly.

Re: Front differential leak???

Would you say taking the hub off at the ball joints would help with the drivers side axle shaft removal? And how hard is dropping the front drive shaft to change the diff input seal?
