Front end clunk....

Hey All,

Please don't flame me....I did my research...I just wanted last minute opinions before I take my rig into the mechanic tomorrow.

I have a front end clunk...I feel it when first accelerating from the front left. When making a turn I hear it as well. Whether I'm parked, the car is off, or driving, when I turn the steering wheel to the right I hear the clunk. Turning to the left produces a clunk from the same area but less pronounced.

I know it could be the rack and pinion, the sway bar bushings, loose nuts....

Anyone who has dealt with this...what did it turn out to be for you.

Re: Front end clunk....

is anything NON OEM in your front end?

if its all stock i would start with sway bar bushings.

Re: Front end clunk....

sway bar end links are worn. You cannot tell by looking at them while they are still on the vehiucle; they must be removed and you will then see the hole is rounded out where they mount.

Thanks for posting back. Just curious, you said you heard a clunk, was the rack just loose and bouncing off of frame or was it one of the joints leading to pinion that was allowing for some play and the clunk? Did you notice any steering issues? Just curious, but thanks for posting back though, seems like a pretty uncommon issue on the wks, glad you got it sorted

Re: Front end clunk....

The steering felt loose...not anything that would alarm you but not as tight as it used to be.

It appeared to be a joint within the steering column itself. When it clunked you could feel it in the pedal and the floor board...it was that noticeable.

It was bound to fail sooner or later because I used to wheel the sh*t out of it.

Re: Front end clunk....

So was the rack replaced or the intermediate shaft? Or both? I've been through 3 racks now and they will start to clunk on accel and as well as turning. It's more of a common issue than most think. Especially when lifted.

Re: Front end clunk....

I'd check to see if its your tie rod or the rack itself. You can pull the bellow boot with the tie rod disco'd from the spindle and check for play in the inner tie rod socket. You can also lay under the drivers side of the rack and push up on the rack rod itself, not the tie rod. Pull down and push up. If it snaps your steering rack is bad. As for replacing the rack I did a write up here.
