Front Right grinding noise

Hey everyone. My name is Aaron Toutloian and I am new to the forums. I drive a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and i love it. I have recently been experiencing an issue with it though. I have noticed in the last couple weeks when i first start it for the day and start to back out of the driveway or take off it makes a grinding noise while turning the wheel left or right. I had a message pop up on the computer once that said "service 4wd," i then shut it off and then restarted it and it never came up since. so after about a week i took it to a local dealership and they looked it over. After about 5 hours of them looking at it they called and said they couldnt figure it out, so i told them to keep looking and they ended up calling chrysler to see what they thought. Chrysler came back and said that the clutchs in the right front werent engaging and that all that in the front right needed to be replaced. (didnt really understand what they said because i dont know much about 4wd systems.) As for the error message they said the accuator switch needed to be replaced because it was faulty, but that seemed wierd to me because they said all the dianostic tests came back with no problems. So after they told me 2500 dollars to fix it i told them to just wait on that because i felt like i was being taken advantage of. I did have them change the front and rear diff fluids and the transmission and filters. I have done some quick research and have come up with some solutions and was wanting some help on this issue. Some people say it could be a bad CV joint or transfer case? is this true? any other ideas?

Take to another shop, Just Brakes, Midas, etc...

ALWAYS get a second opinion. I dont have 4WD but that quote, and the uneducated service people is why they get the name STEALership

Re: Front Right grinding noise

Hi there Aaron!!! Welcome to JG!!!

Sorry to hear your having issues - have had a few of those lately myself!

Though wanted to say that it could be a bad CV Joint - though in my past experience with those (sad to say I've had one or two in my day of driving vehicles) they typically sound more like a click vs grinding when going bad...

There are some great members on here that are pretty experienced in this so maybe they can chime in to kind of guide you with some ideas too!

Re: Front Right grinding noise

In my old Talon AWD the transfer case was on its way out there was a Metal-on-metal noise, I know its a different beast but a shop told me it was the turbo not getting enough oil... I knew my turbo had more than enough oil so safe to say I always go to 2 or 3 shops. heres a Vid of a slipping trans case in an 06 JGC.
