Fuel Saver /Display ECO ...not there?

Just bought a 2009 JGC with the 5.7 engine and cannot get any indication of when it is in the 4 cyl mode. The user manual says that under the personal settings in evic (page 209) there is a "Display ECO" option that will show ECO in the Compass/Temperature display - but that option never shows up at all when I am in the customer programmable Personal Settings menu. I notice the 2008 owners manual doesn't have this option in it, so am wondering if my 2009 has some 2008 components or software in it. It is a SEP 2008 build date.

Also, on page 200 of the manual it says that when Average MPG is on the evic display there should be a message "FUEL SAVER MODE" above the Average MPG whenever the engine is in 4 cyl operation. That doesn't happen either. The example display also shows a trip od figure below the average mpg display and that isn't on my display either. Again, the 2008 book doesn't show this trip od display below the average mpg figure, giving further credibility to 2008 components or software.

One obvious possibility for not seeing the FUEL SAVER MODE is that the engine isn't going into 4 cyl mode at all. But, when I was driving at a constant 60 mph on the way home the average mpg got up to 19, which seemed high if I was still running on 8 cyl. Sure hope someone tells me that is possible while running on 8 and perhaps my problem is that the Multi Displacement isn't kicking in. Just to be clear - I was in D and did not have Tow/Haul in play when I was not getting a message, so I had done nothing that I know of to disable the MD feature.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fuel Saver /Display ECO ...not there?

Welcome to the forum. What weight oil is in the motor? If it has an oil heavier than 5W-20, the MDS will work poorly or not at all. Many Jeep dealers and oil change places don't know better (and can't read the oil cap) and put in bulk 10W-30, or something else. Also, do the "key dance" or get a code reader and check to see if there are any DTC's that you're not aware of. On most engine management DTC's, the PCM will shut the MDS off. Others can probably add to this, but if it still doesn't work after checking these items, it could be something a little more serious.

Re: Fuel Saver /Display ECO ...not there?

Welcome to the forum.

I always hate to have to ask such ridiculous questions (please don't take offence!), but are you sure it is a 2009 and sure it is a hemi? A september 2008 build date should certainly put it into the 2009 model year...

To be absolutely sure, you can check your VIN number to make sure everything is as it should be. In the 8th position of the VIN, you should have a '2' for the Hemi, if it is a 2008 and a 'T' if it is a 2009. The 10th position will be your model year...of course, by looking at the motor, you should be able to tell the hemi from the 4.7L as well

As far as I know, those are the only things that would result in the personal settings menu not even having an option to display the eco mode in the message centre...

Even if the MDS is not functioning properly, the option should still be there...I think

Perhaps another member can chime in, but I don't know what happens to the options menu if the MDS is turned off by a tuner...is the option to display the eco mode still there? I would think so, but again, anything is possible!

Did you buy it from a dealer, or an independent? If it was a dealer, take it to them and ask about it. If it was an independent, I wouldn't bother, most don't even know what the MDS system is.

Hope everything gets worked out!

Re: Fuel Saver /Display ECO ...not there?

Guys,

Thanks for trying to help. I've got it back to the dealer right now and will post results. Since this is a large Jeep dealer and a "Certified" vehicle I doubt that they didn't use the right oil when they prepped the car - but I guess anything is possible. Again, however, it does appear the MDS is working since I am getting 20+mpg under steady state 60mph driving. No offence taken on the year and engine challenge, but yes I verified both with the serial number. Also the "key dance" didn't show anything. Hope to have an answer later today.

Re: Fuel Saver /Display ECO ...not there?

It's certainly an odd one!

Good luck.

Re: Fuel Saver /Display ECO ...not there?

Well the dealer service dept says that despite the fact that the 2008 and 2009 owner's manual says there is a display in the evic that says "FUEL SAVER MODE" while in the average MPG display when the MDS goes to 4 cylinder mode my particular vehicle does not have that feature. Seems unbelievable to me! I would be very interested in responses from people owning a 2008 or 2009 Grand Cherokee Ltd with the 5.7 hemi reporting whether their vehicle does or does not show FUEL SAVER MODE on their evic display when the engine goes into 4 cyl mode.
