I don't work on my own road cars any more, but I "know" cars and am kept busy working on race cars.
The starter can still be "bad" even if there is a click. Often it's the starter solenoid itself (mounted within the starter) that causes that condition. Often a knock with a hammer is enough to get it going, but it's always only a matter of time before it fails completey.

Re: HELP No Crank No Start Just a Click

x2 on replacing the starter now. Click noise is usually a sign of a bad starter, and you REALLY do not want that to go out when your in the middle of no where on a Sunday night. Be safe and replace it now.

Re: HELP No Crank No Start Just a Click

I've had batteries that "jump packs" wouldn't even attempt to turn over. Maybe I had a junky "jump pack". I still like the good old fashioned jumper cables.

Re: HELP No Crank No Start Just a Click

I had this problem too. The Jeep eventually started on its own. Except the connectors for my starter were corroded with mud and dirt. Cleaning them solved the issue. Been over a year now.

People are quick to cry and say starter but that wasn't the case for me. And obviously neither for this guy. Glad someone else was able to fix it the same way I did.

Oh and by the way, it's not a continues click, it's only one click. Same thing with this guy. It says it in the title. It's seems to clearly be an electrical miscommunication issue and not a bad starter.

Re: HELP No Crank No Start Just a Click

Might be the starter, if all else maybe the alternator.

Re: HELP No Crank No Start Just a Click

Starter... first I had issues where we got stranded due to a bad battery all over Yellowstone National Park, then got home and thought the new battery fixed the issue but after delivering a boat it wouldnt start. One click and done. Beat on the starter and no go. Had a starter on it by morning and good to go! Theres a big thread on JU about when the starters have been going out for people. Most are between 75k and 90k.

Re: HELP No Crank No Start Just a Click

it's better if you have someone tap the starter with something while you try to turn engine over

if it still just 'clicks' and nothing else - - - def the starter @_@

i always keep a voltmeter in my car, your 12V battery should read between 13.8V and 15V

can't blame the battery at that point

Re: HELP No Crank No Start Just a Click

what do you mean "start up"? dash lights coming on?

sounds like the engine wants to start but won't turn over?

if you don't hear a click and instead engine is cranking but not turning over, check your battery and (+/-) terminal connections. Remove them, clean with wire brush, pop back on. try starting again.

Re: HELP No Crank No Start Just a Click

The engine wants to start but it don't turn over. I gotta stop cranking then try the second time, usually by the second time it overturns but, before it use to overturn 1st start up.. It's not the battery,i checked the and cleaned the terminals hmmm.

It's most likely the starter.
