HELP! Transfer CaseProblems

Whats up guys? I need some help. Last week I replaced front struts and brakes all around. Car feels good and no problems. Two days ago I towed another car of mine about 200 miles round trip. Nothing over weight by any means. I unpack everything when I get home, put both cars away and thats that. I went to go to work yesterday and the Jeep is acting funny. Whenever I turn the wheel in either direction, the car jerks and feels as if something is binding. I knew my CV boot had a rip in it for some time and thought it finally started to go, so I went outside and replaced it this morning thinking that was the problem. Take the truck back out for a test drive and it does the exact same thing. I pull it back in the garage, jack the entire car off the ground, put it in drive and watch the wheels spin and can see nothing binding or rubbing any way I turn the wheel. Then, I slightly hit the brakes…and this happens. It does not make any noise if the wheels spin freely.

Any ideas as to what is going on? Thanks

Re: HELP! Transfer CaseProblems

Did you confirm the exact location of the noise using a mechanics stethoscope? I would almost say that its the chain inside the T-case which is dragging on the T-case housing. Did you check the T-case fluid for contamination ( and level)? A dragging chain will wear the aluminum casing away and give a grayish colour to the fluid.
You can confirm the slack in the chain by jacking up one front wheel and turning the front propeller shaft to both ends. You will hear the chain touching the bottom of the T-case when it has too much slack.

Re: HELP! Transfer CaseProblems

Thanks, I will check it out tomorrow. People were saying something about the additives in the diff. Would there be a way to check if the dealer actually put it in? Would the fluid be a different color with or without it?

Re: HELP! Transfer CaseProblems

As far as i know does the T-case not need any additive, only the diffs do. And if it was a matter of an additive only, it would not make these strange noises

Re: HELP! Transfer CaseProblems

Ok so I jacked the truck up today. Rear wheels spin independently of each other while the front wheels spin the same direction while spinning only one wheel. I am guessing the diff is locked up. I checked the dealer invoice for the 60K service and it doesn't say anything about the additive for the diffs. Would that be listed on its own or would it fall under the 60K maintenance part of the invoice? Also, is there a way to check if the additive was added? Would it be a different color with or without it?

Re: HELP! Transfer CaseProblems

I never used the additive, but i don't think that you can see it at the colour of the fluid.
Did you check the fluid in T-case and diff and both level/colour ok?
That both front wheels spin in the same direction from the first turn that doesn´t look good. If the diff is locked all the time, it will put a lot of strain to the front driveline. Was there someone with you who could stop one wheel from spinning, to see if it was really locked?

Re: HELP! Transfer CaseProblems

Yea I had my father hold back on the opposite wheel and still both turn the same direction. Then I dropped one side of the truck down and I couldn't turn the wheel that was off the ground. I didn't check the fluid of the transfer case.

Re: HELP! Transfer CaseProblems

Could it possibly be the solenoid in the diff went bad and is not disengaging for some reason?

I'm not familiar with the ELSD differentials from the WK, but it seems to be a possibility yes. I would open up the diff cover and see how it looks inside, if there is any visible damage. Driving for a long time with the diff locked will probably cause damage somewhere in the drivetrain.
