High Engine Temp

A few days ago on my 2008 Grand Cherokee 6-cyl, I got a "Transmission Overtemp" warning while idling in a parking lot waiting on my wife to come out of the store. I then noticed my Temp gauge almost in the red. I immediately turned the motor off. Once I got going, the temp came down. Yesterday, while stuck in a traffic jam, the temp shot back up to almost in the red again. Same thing...once I got moving again, the temp came back down. I first though that the electric fan wasn't coming on. However, when I got home last night, I let the car idle in the driveway and the fan did in fact come on when the temp gauge was right at vertical.

Seems like when air is being forced through the radiator at speed, all is OK. When at idle.......?

Any ideas??

Re: High Engine Temp

Was something done to the cooling fan lately? For some reason it doesn´t seem to draw (enough) air through the radiator when idling, or the waterpump is not moving the coolant enough when at idle.
When the cooling fan runs, does it move a lot of air aft? Are the baffles in place, which should prevent the cooling fan to draw air from the surrounding instead of through the radiator?
Is the accessory belt not slipping when in idle? The belt tension could be too low or the belt became hard.

Re: High Engine Temp

Nothing has been done to the fan at all. There doesn't appear to be any blockage to the air flow and the shroud is in place. I did not check the belt tension.

Re: High Engine Temp

Eventually a loose impellor on the waterpump could decrease the waterflow, which could become too low in idle, but still sufficient at higher rpm.

Re: High Engine Temp

Sometimes it's the simplest things. I was a whole gallon low on coolant, including the reservoir. Drove it around for a while and then let it sit at idle for about 15 minutes. All OK.

Thanks all for your input.

Re: High Engine Temp

A gallon low is quite a bit. I would keep an eye on it for the next weeks to see if it will not go down again.
