Hollw rattle popping sound fron rear right

I have a strange noise coming from the rear end of my jeep. I think I have narrowed it down to something in the rear suspension. If you are riding inside it sounds like a hollow popping rattle sound. Lol I know that's a weird description but its as close as I can get to describing it. It does it when going over small bumps and especially while braking. I think the movement of the body raising in the rear when you brake is why I can hear it while braking. I got under my jeep and moved it up and down and I can hear it and it sounds like it might be coming from One of the control arms or maybe where it mounts. Or maybe the spring perch? Bushing maybe? I tried moving things around and nothing seemed to have any play in it. I don't think its anything serious but it sure is annoying. Anybody have any suggestions?

I would check the e-brake shoes. They have a nasty tendency to brake apart and rattle around back there in the drum. That causes a sound like you describe.

Im almost positive its somewhere in the suspension though. It doesn't do it constantly only when i hit bumps.

Re: Hollw rattle popping sound fron rear right

Hopefully someone with more experience with the rear suspension can add their thoughts...Not sure what could make that sort of noise, especially if nothing feels loose back there. I would start by trying to tighten any bolt I could get my socket on.

Re: Hollw rattle popping sound fron rear right

if you have a crow bar with a tappered end or a smaller prybar, you can stick it in the space around the bushings of the control arms and apply pressure to see if the bushings are bad.

+1. I thought it was a suspension issue for the longest time until I found my e-brake shoes had come loose.

Re: Hollw rattle popping sound fron rear right

The upper coil spring isolators are known to go bad in the WK and when they do, will make creaking like noises. One of mine has recently gone bad, making noises over bumps, and I just special ordered a set from the dealer, as they are not in stock. The Parts counter guy says there have been 4 update revisions to the isolators since 2006.

Re: Hollw rattle popping sound fron rear right

I just had a similar sounding issue and found it was my rear shock. The upper bolt was not tightened all the way and came loose, so the shock would bounce against the upper body slightly on small bumps. If I went over a large bump I wouldn't notice it as it would push with greater force. Anyhow I tightened the bolt and fixed that right up.

Ever since I replaced my front struts with Monroe Reflex/Sensa-Tracs and the rears with the Monroe Load-Adjusting Coil Overs, I haven't had any suspension related creaking.

I cured the standard popping by replacing the front sway bushings with the newer designed ones (mine is an 05) and some axle grease and that helped a little. I'm anxious to get under there and tighten this control arm bolt...

Re: Hollw rattle popping sound fron rear right

Sway bar end links usually need replacement after about 40k. The mounting holes wear and enlarge which could cause the metallic popping noises. You have to remove the links to see this though. If they have over 40k, bout time for new ones anyway. Rockauto has them at a good price; but stay away from the cheapo Deeza links with the plastic ball sockets.
