Holy electrical weirdness! Any ideas?

So just about every electrical system has gone crazy all of the sudden. It started with just a few things acting up (auto high beams going on and off, back up indicator light coming on intermittently while driving). Then the other day my car alarm went off by itself for like half hour and killed the battery. After that the auto wipers started going on when there is no rain, the drivers power seat will twitch and adjust back and forth for a while after pulling the key out, the auto high beams and park aid indicator light keep coming on and off, all of the lights on the dash came on for a few seconds at one point, it no longer saves the drivers seat settings, the heated seat switches stopped working and therefore the heated seats dont work. I have a 2005 Grand Cherokee 5.7 Limited. I am suspecting either a bad alternator and/or battery, or possible bad body control module. Anyone else experience this or have ideas?

Re: Holy electrical weirdness! Any ideas?

I just experienced some of those symptoms after I installed a new radio/nav unit.

First, I checked all fuses. No problem there.

Then, I reinstalled the old radio: everything finally running perfectly,

Next, I installed new radio and everything worked properly.

In your case, I would still go through all fuses first (and battery, as you mentioned).

check the ground strap connections to body under hood for looseness or corrosion...when ground connections lose contact or have less than ideal contact electrical stuff can act possessed.

Agree with 14SummittHemi - check that first. Could be a bad BCM but stuff coming on leads me to believe it is a wiring problem. If you have a wiring diagram showing connectors, look at the diagram and see what connector has all the components you mention going through it and that is prolly your culprit. Sounds like a connector at the BCM is loose; the connector is making & breaking circuits causing a low to high voltage transition on the aforementioned component signal or power circuit(s). Take the connector(s) loose, inspect the wires going into the connector, check the connector(s) at the BCM - look for loose wires or loose connector on the BCM ckt board. Clean the BCM connector(s) and wire harness connector(s) with Contact Cleaner, add more electrically conductive grease into the harness connector and reconnect. You can get both of these things at a big box hardware store. The loose connection could be an intermediate connector from the BCM as well. I suspect you are only looking at one connector, however, but it might be a pita to troubleshoot. Of course it could be something else, but IMO this is a good place to start.

Besides buying the schematic book for $44 ish online you can quickly create a free online account at Autozone dot com and then add your vehicle to get instant online access to all the many, many separate wiring diagrams for view, print or download...its the factory provided stuff...pretty nifty resource I use all the time...
